Comic spies Maxwell Smart and Agent 99 return for the twenty-first century with the hit 2008 film Get Smart
, based on the popular sixties television series created by Mel Books and Buck Henry. Steve Carrell (The 40 Year-Old Virgin
, TV's The Office
) steps into the role of bumbling secret agent Maxwell Smart, originally played by legendary comedian Don Adams in his signature role. Joining Carrell is an all-star cast, including Anne Hathaway, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Adam Arkin and other famous stars, some in surprise cameos. Mixing action, satire, and Carrell's inimitable deadpan comedy stylings, Get Smart
emerged as one of the more enjoyable surprises among Hollywood's superhero movie-loaded summer lineup, and even earned a thumbs up from original series creator Mel Brooks.
Maxwell Smart is a valuable member of spy organization CONTROL, but he's strictly an analyst, and is denied the field assignments that he desperately wants. Smart eventually gets his chance - his time as a desk jockey ends when evil terrorist organization KAOS, led by the megalomaniacal Siegfried (Terence Stamp), attacks CONTROL's headquarters, subsequently exposing and eliminating nearly all of CONTROL's field agents. With few options, CONTROL promotes Smart to agent status, giving him the designation of Agent 86 and partnering him with the gorgeous and deadly Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway). 99 is initially unimpressed by Smart's clumsiness, but soon develops respect - and even romantic feelings - for her new partner. However, she's hesitant to enter into a relationship with a fellow agent, especially since her previous romance with Agent 23 (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) ended poorly. Romance must be put aside, though - KAOS continues to remain one step ahead of CONTROL, and all evidence points to the existence of a double agent in CONTROL's ranks. Shocked, 99 discovers that the double agent may actually be her new partner: Maxwell Smart.
