Vicol Entertainment Ltd. The Road Less Traveled (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)
RM 36.50
YesAsia
Often considered the spiritual successor to Derek Yee's acclaimed romantic drama Lost in Time (2003), The Road Less Traveled again teams up the celebrated filmmaker with Louis Koo, with Yee serving as producer while the popular actor takes starring role rather than a cameo. Director and co-writer Derek Chiu (Brothers) has crafted a poignant and touching tale of redemption from a similar premise about a bittersweet romance born out of a fatal traffic accident. Much credit should be given to the heartfelt performances of co-stars Karen Mok and Crystal Huang, who play the two women Koo is torn between. The film also counts TVB star Wayne Lai, Mainland actors Yin Xiaotian, Liang Dawei, and Baty Chen among its superb cast. Hong Kong truck driver Hui Shing Leung (Louis Koo) travels back and forth between Mainland China and Hong Kong every day. One rainy night on the highway to Guangzhou, Leung accidentally runs over and kills a man, whose wife Lu Yin (Crystal Huang) has just learned about her pregnancy. Out of guilt and pity, Leung tries to make up for the loss and pain he has brought her. He begins taking care of the widow and helping out at her small restaurant. In time, affections grow between the two, much to the chagrin of Leung's live-in girlfriend Susan (Karen Mok). But, just when there seems to be a way out of this love triangle, Yin is devastated to find out the truth that her guardian angel is also her husband's killer...

A seasoned veteran of the Chinese New Year extravaganza, Raymond Wong returns with a rollicking comedy this festive season in An Inspector Calls! As is standard for a Chinese New Year film, the cast is stacked with top-level talent, including Louis Koo (Don't Go Breaking My Heart 2), Teresa Mo (Hotel Deluxe), Eric Tsang (Horseplay), Gordon Lam (Overheard 3), Chrissie Chau (Break Up 100), Karena Ng (Hello Babies) and Zhang Han, among many others. What is less standard is director-producer-star Raymond Wong's choice of source material. The film is adapted from English playwright J.B. Priestly's 1945 play of the same name. Wong and company have reinvented the thrilling drawing room mystery as a raucous black comedy. Just as the fabulously wealthy Mr. and Mrs. Kau (Eric Tsang and Teresa Mo) are preparing for their beloved daughter Sherry (Karena Ng) and her fianc Johnny's (Zhang Han) engagement party, an unwanted distraction barges in on the festivities in the form of Inspector Karl (Louis Koo), who's investigating the apparent suicide of a pregnant young woman, Cindy Cheung (Chrissie Chau). It turns out that Cindy, whether through work or other more scandalous means, was acquainted with every single member of the Kau family. What ensues thereafter is a wacky investigation that threatens to reveal the Kau family's most shocking secrets.

One of the pioneers of the Hong Kong Cinema New Wave, renowned filmmaker Yim Ho (Red Dust and Homecoming) has not been very prolific lately, but his latest work confirms that he still has a voice that matters. Based on the true stories of two fishermen-turned-tycoons, Yim's ambitious new offering sketches a retrospective tale spanning decades of a man's rise to prominence against the ups and downs of the changing times. Charismatic leading man Aaron Kwok (Love for Life) wins applause as the protagonist opposite actresses Charlie Young (After This Our Exile), Annie Liu (Exodus), Josie Ho (Dream Home), and Paw Hee Ching (The Way We Are). The epic-scoped Floating City strikes a chord especially with the Hong Kong people as it talks about their glorious success and identity crisis, but any audience looking for a nostalgic human drama that is both touching and inspiring will also find easy resonance. In the early 1990s, Bo Wah Chuen (Aaron Kwok), merely 40 years old, has already been promoted to the top management position of the British East India Company in Hong Kong, then a crown colony. Looking back over his beginning, he was raised in a poor, boat-dwelling family of Tanka fishermen - although he doesn't look anything like pure Chinese - and had not received proper education until he reached adulthood. Coming from such humble background, Chuen was met with a great deal of ridicule and discrimination due to class and racial biases. But through his own hard work, the lowly office assistant strove to climb up the ranks and eventually became the multinational trading giant's first ever Chinese taipan. Still, despite his extraordinary achievements, Chuen is confused where his root truly lies...

When Hong Kong falls into darkness, it's up to a team of heroic firefighters to bring light back into the city in As the Light Goes Out, a big-budget disaster thriller from Gallants director Derek Kwok. Sharing the screen for the first time since Dragon Tiger Gate, Nicholas Tse and Shawn Yue co-star as two firefighters whose friendship is tested in the face of great calamity. Reflecting the mood of contemporary Hong Kong society, Kwok shows that the true danger in a fire is the smoke, which can envelop us and leave us with our own fears and insecurities. Co-starring Simon Yam, Hu Jun and Andy On, As the Light Goes Out topped the Hong Kong box office for four consecutive weeks and earned eight nominations at the Hong Kong Film Awards. Christmas Eve, Hong Kong. Temperature is at an all-time high, and so is the tension between young firefighters Sum (Nicholas Tse), Bong (Shawn Yue) and Fai (Andy On) at the Lung Kwu Tang Fire Station. A year earlier, Bong took the fall for a deadly incident, and Fai took advantage of it to get ahead. Since then, Bong and Sum's friendship with Fai has been sour and hostile. Meanwhile, Hai Yang (Hu Jun) is a newly transferred firefighter from Mainland China, and hard-line veteran Pui (Simon Yam) is determined to break him in before he enters retirement. When a seemingly small fire at a local distillery leads to an explosion at a nearby power plant, Hong Kong falls into a citywide blackout. Now, the Lung Kwu Tang firefighters must band together to stop the fire at the power plant and rescue those trapped inside. This edition includes a visual commentary by director Derek Kwok, star Shawn Yue, special effects supervisor Henri Wong and cinematographer Jason Kwan, as well as making of, interviews and trailers.

Director Higashi Yoichi's Wandering Home is a fictional adaptation of an autobiography by a traumatized war photographer whose alcoholism destroyed himself and his family. Now, see the story from his long-suffering ex-wife's point of view in Kaasan's Mom's Life, based on the popular autobiographical manga series by Saibara Rieko. This live-action adaptation stars Koizumi Kyoko (Tokyo Sonata) as Saibara, a manga artist struggling to juggle work, her two children, and her alcoholic husband everyday. In a surprise casting move that shocked the Japanese film world, Koizumi's real-life ex-husband Nagase Masatoshi (Funuke Show Some Love You Losers) plays Saibara's self-destructive husband in a performance that earned him the Best Actor award at the Japan Film Critics Award. Director Kobayashi Shotaro and writer Manabe Katsuhiko inject a sense of humor into the story without undermining the subject matter, fluidly shifting between dark comedy and a serious exploration of alcoholism's effect on family. On a typical day, manga artist Saibara Rieko (Koizumi Kyoko) takes her two children to school, works at home, and visits her husband Yutaka (Nagase Masatoshi) at rehab. A former war photographer who has been truly affected by what he has seen in the war zone, Yutaka is a good family man, a failing writer, and an alcoholic. Despite Rieko's warnings, Yutaka finally drinks himself into the hospital, leading to the two agreeing to divorce. When the children confess to their mother that they miss their father, Rieko agrees to take Yutaka back again when he quits drinking. Will Yutaka finally lives up to his promise, or will he go back to his old ways?

Japan's most famous public prosecutor is back! Popular Japanese TV and film franchise Hero returns to cinemas in 2015 with a new box office-topping mystery. First aired in 2001, Hero follows unorthodox public prosecutor Kuryu Kohei (Kimura Takuya). Known for eschewing the typical suit and tie in favor of jeans and an orange down jacket and impulsively purchasing infomercial gadgets, Kuryu's behavior often flummoxes his colleagues at a public prosecutor's office in Tokyo. However, his slacker appearance and attitude belie a brilliant investigative mind and compassionate heart, which help him crack one impossible case after another. Directed by Suzuki Masayuki and scripted by Fukuda Yasushi, both regulars of the series, the 2015 Hero feature film continues on from the 2014 television series. Besides Kimura Takuya, Kitagawa Keiko returns as his assistant, as do fellow prosecutors Sugimoto Tetta, Hamada Gaku and Yoshida Yo. Matsu Takako, who did not appear in the 2014 season, makes her return to the series after an eight-year absence. This time, Kuryu and his colleagues try to solve a case that is linked to a foreign embassy. However, their investigation is hampered by extraterritoriality.

Soon after on October 23, 2004, a major earthquake hits the area, and entire sections of Yamakoshi are reduced to rubble.

This set comes with the live-action movie adaptation of Death Note, the sequel Death Note: The Last Name, and the spin-off movie L Change The World. Death Note Popular manga series Death Note first appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump in December 2003. With its anti-hero protagonist, dark psychological themes, innovative premise, and unpredictable plot twists, Death Note was an instant hit, amassing an avid readership in its three years of serialization. It was later published in a 12-volume set in multiple languages, selling 18 million copies worldwide. In summer 2006, the film version of Death Note, starring Fujiwara Tatsuya and Matsuyama Kenichi became a blockbuster success throughout Asia. Death god Ryuk has attracted much attention in the film. Nakamura Shidou's (Be with You) voice convincingly attributes a personality to this CG-generated character. Ryuk leaves his killing weapon, the Death Note, in the mortal world, just to see what will happen. As the instructions within the notebook clearly state, the human whose name is written in the notebook dies. Bright and restless student Light (Fujiwara Tatsuya) picks up the notebook, and soon realizes the power that has been bestowed upon him. He adopts the name Kira (Killer) and sets about ridding the world of criminals. His callous renegade justice, however, is not tolerated by the authorities. Faced with so many unexplained deaths, the police enlist the assistance of the young genius L, whose eccentricity is aptly portrayed by Matsuyama Kenichi. And so begins a dangerous battle of wits between the mysterious L and the increasingly calculating Light. Death Note: The Last Name After sweeping through Japan and Hong Kong in the summer of 2006, manga-turned-blockbuster Death Note presents its thrilling conclusion in the highly anticipated sequel, Death Note: The Last Name. Topping the Japanese box office for four straight weeks, Death Note: The Last Name decides the fates of anti-hero protagonist Yagami Light and quirky, sweets-consuming detective L. Fujiwara Tatsuya and Matsuyama Kenichi, who will also be starring in an L spin-off film scheduled for release in 2007, reprise their signature roles, alongside new cast member Toda Erika and not one, but two CGI Death Gods. Full of unpredictable twists, probing mind games, and gallows humor, the film is as enthralling as it is challenging, bringing a new level of wit and tension to popcorn entertainment. Featuring a shocking new ending especially crafted for the film, Death Note: The Last Name will leave a lasting impression on viewers. Death Note owner Light (Fujiwara Tatsuya) joins the police team in order to square off against his rival L (Matsuyama Kenichi), who rightly suspects Light of being Kira. Both Light and L are thrown off, however, when another Kira appears. A second Death Note has fallen to earth, and this time it ge

L returns to the big screen in the blockbuster Death Note spin-off L change the WorLd! Stealing the show with his performance in the two Death Note films, Matsuyama Kenichi reprises his fan-favorite role as the quirky genius detective with a sweet tooth and thick eyeliner. Directed by Nakata Hideo of Ring and Dark Water fame, L change the WorLd revolves around the last 23 days of L's life, shedding new light into the inner world of the awkward and endearing prodigy as he embarks on his final adventure. Though the film does reference elements from Ohba Tsugumi's manga including the school for the gifted that trained L and other one-letter detectives, the story itself is developed from an original screenplay. Running at leisurely pace on offbeat humor, L change the WorLd leaves behind the Death Note plot device in favor of more character development and screen time for everyone's favorite barefooted detective. Watch L as he chews sugar cubes, rides a bike, makes new friends, saves the day, and maybe even stands up straight! With only 23 days left to live, L (Matsuyama Kenichi) burns the remaining Death Note and proceeds to work day and night solving as many cases and consuming as many sweets as possible. One final case is sent his way in the form of a Thai boy who alone survived a deadly virus outbreak in his village. L gets another guest when 12-year-old girl Maki (Fukuda Mayuko, Little DJ) shows up on the doorstep. Both children are connected to an Ebola-influenza virus developed by Maki's father which has been stolen by terrorists. With the terrorists hunting for Maki and threatening to unleash the virus, L is forced to leave his chair and venture out into the real world, both children in stow. The days tick down as L rushes to develop an antidote and catch the terrorists before time runs out.

The "chasing girls" formula returns in The Romancing Star 2, a direct sequel to the hit comedy The Romancing Star! Chow Yun Fat leaves his buddies Eric Tsang, Stanley Fung, and Nat Chan Bak Cheung to their own devices, so the first thing the trio do is get taken hostage in a bank robbery! The trio makes it onto TV, which equals instant celebrity, but the big station in town won't give them a job. Enter Andy Lau, who gives the guys their own talk show on a rival station, where they beat up their guests for being annoying. Meanwhile, a trio of comely females (including Elizabeth Lee and Carina Lau) move in next door, and the chase is on! Like the first Romancing Star film, The Romancing Star 2 is rife with movie parodies and random silliness, but this sequel also mercilessly spoofs the Hong Kong television industry, and many popular TVB serials from the time. Fun laughs, pretty girls, and utterly agreeable hijinks are the ticket in The Romancing Star 2!

The famous tale of Mae Nak Phra Khanong gets the comedic treatment in Pee Mak Phra Khanong, a horror comedy from Shutter director Bangjong Pisanthanakun. Thai heartthrob Mario Maurer (Jan Dara: The Beginning) stars as Mak, a soldier returning to his loving wife Nak (Davika Hoorne) after surviving the war. However, his four war buddies and the rest of the town realize something that Mak doesn't want to believe: His wife is dead and has returned to the human world as a ghost. Pee Mak isn't the first adaptation of the famous ghost tale, but Pisanthanakun brings a refreshing comic twist to a somber tale of terror and star-crossed lovers by adding Mak's four war buddies as comic relief. The result is a film that is a spooky and hilarious ride with a touching love story. The fun genre hybrid proved to be a great draw for audiences across Asia, making Pee Mak the highest grossing domestic film of all time in Thailand, as well as a surprise hit in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

When she meets the weak Golden Labrador Retriever Kinako, she falls immediately in love and decides to train her to become a police dog. After the ambitious Shinjuku Incident, Derek Yee dips into the cops-and-robbers genre once more with the psychological thriller Triple Tap. With a title referring to a special (and fictional) firearm shooting technique that involves a shooter firing three consecutive shots at the same spot, the film is a thematic follow-up to the 2000 gunplay action thriller Double Tap, also produced by Yee. Similar to its predecessor, Triple Tap explores the depths of madness within a man corrupted by greed and the power of the gun. Daniel Wu and Louis Koo reunite once again as two competitive gun shooters involved in a cerebral game of wits in the aftermath of a fatal armed robbery. Alex Fong Chung Sun reprises his role from Double Tap and One Nite in Mongkok, playing a veteran police detective who has been forever scarred by the dangerous power of the gun. To balance out the testosterone, Twins' Charlene Choi and Li Bing Bing (The Message) also join the cast to give the film a much-needed feminine touch. Financial wunderkind Ken (Louis Koo) and hotshot police detective Jerry (Daniel Wu) meet as competitors at a shooting competition. After the competition, Ken encounters an armed robbery on the highway and uses his gun to take down several of the criminals. Under the strict firearm laws of Hong Kong, Jerry files charges against Ken, who manages to escape conviction. However, Jerry is not convinced that Ken is completely innocent and goes to his mentor Miu (Alex Fong Chung Sun) for advice. Meanwhile, Ken's stress from juggling work and the two women in his life (Charlene Choi and Li Bing Bing) is starting to wear him down psychologically. With one of the robbers (Chapman To) coming back for revenge and Jerry pressing forward with his investigation, Ken hits his breaking point.
