To those who are uninitiated with this inside joke: No, this is not a promo from Asus offering a whole year’s supply of chicken dinner when you purchase the phone. This PUBG reference is reflective of the recent increase in popularity of mobile gaming. With Malaysians being more passionate and interested with mobile games like PUBG, Fortnite, and Mobile Legends, it is not surprising that Asus has decided to produce a gaming-focused smartphone in the form of the ROG Phone.
Simply said, the ROG Phone was built with hardcore gaming in mind and is Asus’ answer to the standards set by the Razer Phone. Being a gaming-focused phone, it is unsurprising that the ROG Phone boasts powerful specifications to deliver an unparalleled mobile gaming experience to its users.
In terms of its design, the ROG phone resembles a miniature version of the Asus Zephyrus gaming laptop with its angular design. There is also backlit ROG emblem that is commonly seen on gaming laptops today. Staying true to its gaming-centric theme, the default orientation of the home screen is horizontal which makes the phone more optimal for gaming.
Another interesting feature on the phone is the presence of three USB-C ports. In portrait mode, there is the standard one at the bottom of the device, while the remaining two ports are placed on the left. The idea behind the additional ports is so that you can charge the device in landscape mode without getting the cables entangled with one of your hands. Apart from that, the phone also sports a 3D vapour-chamber cooling system to offer 16x more heat dissipation area, therefore allowing longer CPU peak endurance for your gaming marathons.
Responsive AMOLED Display

Ask any gamer and they will tell you that visual quality is one element that can make or break your gaming experience. To ensure that you get "eye-gasm" while playing, the ROG Phone sports a 6-inch Full-HD+ AMOLED display with a 2,160x1,080p resolution and 18:9 screen-to-body ratio. The screen has a 90Hz refresh rate which is better than what you will find on the majority of the smartphones today, as well as a lightning-fast response time of 1ms.
Despite not being as fast as the Razer Phone’s 120Hz LCD screen, the display on the ROG phone provides better colour gamut and contrast ratio which leads to more immersive gameplay. Asus has also equipped the device with an image processing chip that supports HDR display that can be used for gaming and video playback.
Running on Dragon Power
Under its hood, the ROG Phone is powered by a speed-binned Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 which has a top CPU clock speed of 2.96GHz, a first in mobile. That is paired up with 8GB of RAM, as well as an option of 128GB or 512GB of internal storage. This combination of internal hardware is more than capable of handling any 3D and graphics-intensive game that you throw at it.
Backing its impressive processing power is a 4,000mAh battery pack that supports Asus’ 20W HyperCharge direct charging which can recharge the device up to 60% capacity in around 30 minutes.
Other Interesting Features
Asus has pulled out all the stops to appeal to avid mobile gamers with the addition of innovative features designed to provide a more holistic mobile gaming experience. One feature that Asus is debuting on the ROG phone is the AirTrigger sensors. These ultrasonic touch sensors are placed atop the device (if oriented on portrait mode) and can be programmed for custom actions while playing your favourite games. The device also comes with an advanced haptic actuator that gives you tactile feedback while you game.
Apart from the device itself, Asus also offers an arsenal of accessories to complement the ROG phone with – one of it being the TwinView Dock. As its name suggests, this accessory essentially transforms the ROG Phone into a Nintendo DS-style gaming console as it comes with a 6-inch, 1080p resolution display. Apart from providing dual-screen gaming, the additional screen can also be used for other functions such as reading Reddit memes and Twitch chats. The dock also features a quad-speaker sound system, enhanced cooling for the phone, and an extended 6,000mAh battery – all the elements you need for hours of nonstop gaming. Additionally, there is also a Mobile Desktop Dock that enables users to connect the phone to PC peripherals such as mice, keyboards, and 4K monitors.
Sporting powerful internals, a lightning-speed display, and useful complementary accessories, the ROG phone looks poised to dominate the mobile gaming industry. Asus has outdone themselves this time, producing a mobile gaming powerhouse that might just leave Razer Phone and Xiaomi Black Shark in the dust.
