The Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus: A Preview of Samsung’s Next Flagship Duo

22 February 2018 | Jonathan So

2017 has been a great year for South Korean smartphone manufacturers, Samsung as it managed to regain its reputation as the top brand in the industry with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 smartphones. The company is planning to leverage on the momentum it has built by releasing its next flagship, the Galaxy S9.

Although no official news has been released so far, Samsung might as well give up on keeping the Galaxy S9 a secret, what with the number of leaks online that is leaving almost nothing to the imagination. Here is a sneak peek of everything you need to know about Samsung’s next flagship smartphone before the official reveal.

Samsung Galaxy S9 Malaysia Release Date

Smartphone users who are planning to change their devices need not wait too long as the Samsung Galaxy is set to be released soon. Samsung is planning to unveil the phone on February 25, 2018, in conjunction with the Mobile World Congress 2018 which will be start on the next day. According to The Investor, the official release date for the Samsung Galaxy S9 and its larger counterpart, the Galaxy S9+ is March 16, 2018. Furthermore, Soyacincau.com reported that the Galaxy S9 has passed Malaysia’s SIRIM certification which further indicates that it could go on sale in Malaysia soon!

According to leaked images, the Samsung Galaxy S9 will look relatively similar to the Galaxy S8, albeit a small but welcomed improvement – the fingerprint sensor is now more located at a more accessible place. This means that the new flagship will be sporting the same metal-and-glass chassis as seen on its predecessor. IPA leak online has revealed all the colours that the unit is set to ship in – Coral Blue, Lilac Purple, Midnight Black, and Titanium Grey.

Display

In terms of the display, the Galaxy S9 will very likely be equipped with a 5.8-inch QHD+ Super AMOLED panel with 2,960 x 1,440p resolution while the Galaxy S9 Plus will be fitted with a 6.2-inch screen. Samsung has always been praised for its impressive screen tech and with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus, the Korean brand is planning to push the envelope even further by introducing the Y-OCTA technology. Gordon Kelly from Forbes reported that this duo could be the first smartphones to feature this technology. The Y-OCTA (Youm On-Cell Touch AMOLED) technology will enable Samsung to place touch sensors directly on the OLED layer, hence reducing both the thickness and weight as well as making the display more responsive.

Cameras

One of the main highlights for the Galaxy S9 will be its rear cameras. The device is speculated to feature a 12MP dual-aperture sensor that performs as good in low light as in bright environments as the phone can adjust the camera’s power depending on the surrounding conditions. Despite not having the dual rear camera setup that has become a staple in most flagships today, the camera is still a fan favourite as it can take superb low-light photos and capture slo-mo footage at 960fps, a new benchmark for smartphone cameras.

Internal Hardware and Specifications

As it is a flagship device, you can expect the Galaxy S9 to pack some serious firepower. The models sold in Malaysia will run on the Samsung’s own Exynos 9810 chipset that is supported by 4GB of RAM. This combination of specs should result in the phone performing flawlessly for whatever task you throw at it. Both models will also sport AKG-tuned dual stereo speakers, which combined with the powerful processor will translate to a mobile entertainment powerhouse.

Battery

The battery should remain unchanged from last year; the Galaxy S9 is expected to come with a 3,000mAh battery and a 3,500mAh battery on the Galaxy S9 Plus. However, Samsung is expected to include software and hardware to optimise the battery consumption of both devices. Wireless charging should also be present for both smartphones.

To summarise, here is what the Samsung Galaxy S9 specs sheet look like based on the rumours so far:

Samsung Galaxy S9 Specifications
Display Resolution QHD+ (1440 x 2960)
Display Size 5.8-inch
Display Tech Super AMOLED
Chipset Exynos 9810
RAM/Storage 4GB/64GB & 128GB
Cameras 12MP rear camera & 8MP front camera
Battery 3,000mAh

On paper, both the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus looks to be strong contenders for the "Best Smartphone" throne. But only time will tell if they will live up to the hype and expectations.
