The Asus ROG Chimera G703 – World’s fastest display on a gaming laptop

06 November 2017 | Jonathan So

Asus is making its presence known amongst avid gamers with a new addition to its Republic of Gamers (ROG) line of gaming laptops. The ROG G703 (also known as the Asus ROG Chimera) is a lean, mean, gaming machine that is equipped with some serious hardware designed to deliver desktop-like gaming performance. Here is a breakdown of what comes with this Asus laptop:

Sublime Design

First-off, this “beast” is an absolute beauty (pun intended). The all-aluminium body not only feels completely solid, it adds a hint of class to the laptop. The ROG Chimera G703’s aesthetics are further enhanced with thanks to its titanium and copper colour scheme. Although it is not as svelte as you might expect from a gaming laptop – measuring 2 inches (5.1cm) thick – the laptop compensates in terms of comfort. Asus has equipped the laptop with soft-touch rubber at key areas such as the keyboard deck and palm rests, providing more comfort to users especially for prolonged gaming sessions.

Another notable mention on this Asus gaming laptop is its mechanical keyboard. The keyboard comes with 2.5mm of key travel and a fully customisable per-key RGB backlighting. This hybrid gaming device also includes a built-in Xbox Wireless Controller module for you to sync the device with up to eight Xbox controllers to the laptop without using a wireless dongle or Bluetooth connection.

Immersive Display

Many leading gaming laptop vendors today are offering models that have FHD panels with a 120 Hz refresh rate. Asus, however, has stepped it up a notch by equipping the ROG G703 with a 17.3” AHVA panel featuring a 144Hz refresh rate, the highest offered by a gaming laptop thus far. Colours are reproduced accurately, and contrast levels are widely represented, two elements that make or break your gaming experience.

Putting the visual aspect offered by a display with high refresh rates, the 144Hz screen on this 17-inch gaming laptop is one that gamers will appreciate as the display will be able to keep up with their twitch sensitive movements more effectively. A higher refresh rate also means improved motion resolution and reduced screen-tearing. Speaking of screen-tearing, the 144Hz IPS display is supported by Nvidia’s G-Sync to combat tearing and stuttering.

To date, the ROG Chimera G703 is the first and only laptop in the world to have such a high refresh rate which means that it is a must-buy if you deem yourself a serious gamer.

Solid Specifications

To ensure that the ROG Chimera ticks all the right boxes, Asus has put in a flurry of heavyweight internal components. At the heart of the device is an Intel Core i7-7820HK processor which comes already overclocked and runs up to 4.3GHz, along with a GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card with 8GB worth of video RAM. The pair is backed by a hefty 32GB of DDR4 system RAM that can be expanded up to 64GB. Storage-wise, the ROG Chimera has a pair of 256GB NVMe PCIe SSDs set to RAID 0 configuration, with a 1TB hard disk for additional space.

Other Noteworthy Mentions

All the goodness does not stop here. As you know, gaming is never complete with just advanced graphics; audio quality plays a big part as well. To make sure that the audio quality matches its incredible graphics, this Asus gaming laptop features an advanced audio sub-system consisting of four speakers and an amplifier. Every sound is reproduced with pinpoint accuracy, making you feel that you are part of the game itself.

Playing games at full capacity might cause the internals of a laptop to overheat. To guarantee proper cooling of the components, Asus has equipped the device with its new Anti-Dust Cooling system. The cooling system is designed to prevent accumulation of dust inside the machine by pulling air in through the bottom and out through vents located on the sides and rear, bringing with it any harmful dust particles and other contaminants. The laptop also has three thick heat pipes and four thick ones for the CPU and GPU respectively for better heat dissipation. This enables the system to cool both key components of the laptop, allowing them to perform at optimum temperatures for longer periods.

The ROG Chimera looks more than capable of handling every game that you throw at it. Well, with a price of USD3,499, it better be. However, if you feel that the ROG Chimera is above your budget (understandable) or that you are a casual gamer and do not need a gaming laptop of its calibre, you can also check out these Asus Republic of Gamers laptops that better suits your needs.
