Should You Wait for Samsung's Galaxy Note 8?

10 August 2017 | Reymart Jan Sarigumba

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is going to be outstanding on paper but we can't really say if it's something that we've never seen before. So, is it going to be worth the wait?

While this phone is indeed worth the wait, it doesn’t mean that the available phones in the Malaysia today can’t provide you an equally satisfactory performance as the Galaxy Note 8. It depends on what you are looking for in a smartphone. There is more than one reason why the Note 8 should be sought after but does spending a bomb on its release actually justify your smartphone needs?

Should you buy it? Or should you not? We break it down for you.

Why you shouldn't wait for it?

There are smartphones already available right now in the Malaysia which are considerably cheaper but highly efficient in terms of features. That being said, buying the Galaxy Note 8 for the following reasons may not be worth the wait and the money, as other phones can do it better or exactly the same for you.

Battery life isn’t outstanding

As we all know, the Samsung tried to push their limits with the Note 7’s battery - and we all know how it turned out. Today, despite having an industry leading 8-point battery check in their quality department and safety panel, we can’t really expect them to pull off the same stunt as they did with the Note 7’s battery. Instead, they are sure to play it safe as it is too early to do another “explosive” stunt with their battery - not until the thought of it gets complete dissociated from their label.

The safest bet that they could take right now with their battery is an average size that's right in the middle of the pack when compared to the competition. Recent reports added credence to this speculation as it is believed that the Note 8 will have a smaller battery than the S8+, due to the size of the device and the integrated S-Pen stylus.

Best alternative: Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy 7 Edge perhaps will fill you in if you’re looking for a device with a decent battery. With a capacity of 3600 mAh, not even the S8+ could outmatch it. The latest device flagship device from Samsung (the S8 and S8+) have a decent battery, each with 3000 mAh and 3500 mAh respectively.

Not necessarily the biggest screen size

According to the reports, the Note 8 will be sporting a 6.3-inch Quad-HD infinity display, which is just a hair bigger than the Galaxy S8+. If you’re one of those people who use the Note series for the big display, without really making use of its S-pen, then you might as well just buy the S8+. It’s already available now, and it isn’t going to be as expensive as the Note 8. Practically, you’ll be getting almost the same thing with the screen, but just a millimeter smaller.

Best alternative: Galaxy S8+

The Galaxy S8+ sports a 6.2-inch screen with a Quad HD display, making it just a little bit smaller than the Note 8. The 0.1mm difference between Note 8 and S8+’s screen size isn’t really a leap that will make much difference at all. So, if you’re simply itching for a phablet sized Galaxy phone, the S8+ will more than suffice for that.

Bixby is not Note 8 exclusive

Bixby is set to compete with Apple’s Siri in terms of AI functionality. While at the moment, it isn’t really fully polished as Siri, a Note 8 won’t make it any smarter either. It’s a software that can just be patched with updates on your Galaxy S8 and S8+ via software update. If by the time the Note 8 gets released Bixby will have an update, rest assured that the S8 and S8+ will have it too.

Best alternative: Galaxy S8 and S8+

Galaxy S8 and S8+ already comes with the Bixby Voice Assistant feature, however, according to Samsung, they’ll be expanding it to their most recent devices. While there’s no specific date yet as to when this will happen, it’s a guarantee that all recent Samsung devices with their latest launcher are bound to get Bixby soon.

Samsung Dex

Whether you’re using the Note 8 or the Galaxy S8, Samsung Dex will pretty much remain the same unless they patch it with new updates. It’s simply an OS that can be improved without relying on the phone’s hardware department and could be updated anytime.

Best alternative: Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+

Galaxy S8’s specs and hardware can definitely deliver a decent desktop performance, upgrading to a Note 8 for such reason won’t really make much difference. It will only be more expensive.

Why should you wait for the Note 8?

The Note series has its own skill set that gets better on its newer flagship devices. On top of that, the recent flagship devices may be great devices, but they also have flaws which are enough reasons to be given a thumbs down by some users. Also, since it’s a newer (and a more expensive) device, in theory, it’s supposed to be better overall.

Better fingerprint location

One of the most glaring flaws of the Galaxy S8 series is the position of its fingerprint sensor. It couldn’t be more awkward and hard to reach. So, if you’re avoiding that series for such reason, the Galaxy Note 8 will surely be a delightful surprise. According to the recent leaks and reports, Samsung has finally fixed the issue that the S8 had with its fingerprint, positioning it within our reach - right below the camera.

S-pen!

The Note series has tons of features that no other smartphones were able to pull off, all thanks to its every famous S-pen stylus. Productivity is the name of the game for the Note series, and the Note 8 is sure to deliver more than just one way for us to work while on the go!

Dual camera

Up until now, Samsung hasn’t joined the dual camera competition yet. While the cameras for their recent flagship devices are considered among the best in the market right now. The added functionality of dual camera surely opens a lot of new ways for us to play around with our smartphone cameras. With Samsung’s excellent single cameras on the S8 and S8+, we could only imagine how much better it could get with two lenses.

Better performance

Not all the latest flagship devices from Samsung aren’t promising enough to fill this role. However, if you’re simply after the best performance from a smartphone on paper, it’s a good enough reason to hold on to your wallet for this device. Rumor has it that this will be the first 6GB RAM smartphone from Samsung. For hardcore users, that’s definitely worth the investment.

At the end of the day, it boils down to your budget and your needs. If your biggest concern is the battery you have the S7 for that; if it’s the screen - the Note 8 doesn’t really have much difference with the S8+. If you want a Samsung phone with a dual camera or you simply need the handy features of the S-pen to boost your productivity, the Note 8 is clearly the phone for you.

The Note 8 isn’t really the most practical choice at the moment, considering that its price will eventually drop as it gets outdated. But, if it fits the bill (literally and figuratively) then go ahead and wait for it.
