OnePlus 5T Revealed – Features 18:9 Display, Facial Recognition, and Dual-Camera Setup

Chinese smartphone manufacturer OnePlus has officially unveiled its latest flagship, the OnePlus 5T, a successor to the highly popular OnePlus 3T. The highlights of the recently launched device include a full-frontal display with 18:9 aspect ratio, a new camera system, and facial recognition capabilities, amongst others. The most noticeable difference between the OnePlus 5T and its predecessor, the OnePlus 5, is the new AMOLED display that is featured on the former. The 1080p display is surrounded by minimal bezels, thus giving it an 18:9 screen-to-body ratio.

The OnePlus 5T also has a new camera system with a dual-camera setup at its rear, featuring a 20MP secondary telephoto sensor. OnePlus has also integrated the “Intelligent Pixel Technology”, which improves low-light photography and eliminates more noise than the OnePlus 5. The improved cameras also film 4K video with electronic image stabilization. Moreover, the smartphone also supports a Face Unlock feature which enables users to unlock the device via facial recognition. OnePlus promises speedy results for the feature, scanning and analysing faces in under half a second.

At the core of the device is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset paired with either 6GB or 8GB worth of RAM. There are two non-expandable storage variants to choose from – 64GB and 128GB. Like other OnePlus smartphones, the 5T also runs on the custom Oxygen OS operating system, built based on the Android 7.1.1 Nougat, which should be in line to be updated to the Android Oreo come early 2018. The OS enables users to keep personal and professional email accounts separate on the same device.

So far, there is no word yet on when the OnePlus 5T will be available in Malaysia. The estimated cost for the OnePlus 5T is around RM2075 ($499) for the 64GB/6GB model while the 128GB/8GB variant is around RM2,330 ($559).

It will be available in its signature flat-finished aluminium Midnight Black colour and in two different storage and RAM specifications: 64GB storage with 6GB RAM or 128GB storage with 8GB RAM (non-expandable storage, unfortunately). Both variants share the powerful Snapdragon 835 processor and Adreno 540 GPU.
