Battle of the Bezel-less – Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 vs iPhone X

05 November 2017 | Jillian Cheong

Over the years, we’ve seen a similar pattern with each release of a new smartphone. And most of the time, it had something to do with the shrinking bezel. Some might say it is for aesthetic purposes, but you can’t deny that it has become a legit trend. In this article, we are going to know which bezel-less phone is better; the iPhone X or the Xiaomi Mix 2?

If you’re not familiar with the term Bezel, it is used to describe the front frame of a phone excluding the screen. Another term that goes hand in hand with Bezel-less is Miniaturization. It is a method of effectively allowing smartphone designers to clear any extra clutter from the front screen. This obsession may have stemmed from the first release of iPhone back in 2007.

Why go Bezel-Free?

Other than the obvious benefit of having more space for photo and video content, it offers users a more immersive experience particularly when it comes to playing games and watching videos. Speaking of more space, the larger screen offers users more accuracy with the touchscreen whether if it’s on or offline. And on top of that, it does not sacrifice the ergonomics. This year, iPhone X’s bezel-less rival is the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 which is seen being compared to many experts. Let’s take a look at how these two smartphones fare against each other.

Slated to be launched on November 14th, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is packed with a new design and internal upgrades. Being the successor of Mi Mix, which was only launched in China, Xiaomi has plans to go global with their new release. The rear panel of the smartphone is gorgeously crafted from ceramic and fits nicely into an aluminium chassis. Also, the frame has a slight curve around the edges in order to integrate the 5.99-inch full HD display on the front in an 18:9 ratio. Now, you can see why Xiaomi decided to go international with this one.

For the iPhone X, there is a consistent bezel across the four sides of the smartphone. The top of the phones features a cut-out that houses their TrueDepth camera system.

Thanks to the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 octa-core processor with Adreno 540 as the graphics chip, the Mi Mix 2’s display is just stunning! On the other hand, it runs on an Android 7.1 Nougat based MIUI 9.0

Running on iOS11, the iPhone X utilises their self-developed A11 Bionic hexa-core chipset and comes with an Apple-designed GPU and ISP.

Xiaomi designed the lower bezel on the Mi Mix 2 to be darker in order to cleverly hide the sensors and front-facing 5-megapixel camera. The biggest change other than the screen from its predecessor is its upgraded camera. Spotting a 12-megapixel camera, it utilises the technology from Sony’s IMX386 sensor module it is also supported by optical image stabilisation.

On the other hand, the iPhone X comes with a dual 12-megapixel camera that supports dual optical image stabilization. It also comes with a wide-angle lens couple with a telephoto lens with a f/1.8 and f/2.4 aperture sizes respectively on the back. The front has a 7-megapixel camera with a f/2.2 aperture.

The Round-Up

In a nutshell, bezel-less smartphones are still far from perfect. But between these two phones, the iPhone X takes the upper hand in terms of the overall design. Nonetheless, it is still one of the most expensive smartphones to be released thus far. If you want to avoid burning a hole in your pocket, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2’s price tag is the smartphone for you especially if you strongly believe in “less is so much more”.
