Considered as one of the greatest animated movies of all time, Toy Story and its sequels have a special place in everyone’s hearts. From tiny tots to nostalgic adults, Toy Story’s anthropomorphic characters appeal to anyone of any ages. Read here to find out why this animated film series is so special.

How Toy Story Changed the Film Industry

When the first Toy Story movie came out in 1996, it was a pretty big deal. It had a great impact on the movie industry because it was the first fully computer-animated feature film. This brainchild of Disney and Pixar was the first of its kind. No one else had succeeded in generating and completing computer-animated films. Before the release of Toy Story, Pixar was just a small, relatively young company then chaired by Steve Jobs. However, the release of the series made the company as one of the leading animation firms in the world.

The Toy and The Story

Audience and critics were mainly impressed by two factors: the toys and the story. The creation of the characters began with hand-drawn animation, just like how other Disney movies were created. However, the hardest part was incorporating these hand-drawn characters with 3D animation and other technological innovation. The anthropomorphic characters were based on simple geometric objects that one could easily fin in a toy box. The creators avoided a more organic silhouette due to it looking rather plastic ad cheap. This approach sets the texture and 3D animation in the film apart from other animated films.

In the midst of all the technologic breakthrough, Pixar wanted to keep the values and essence of a Disney film by focusing on the quality of the plot. After Walt Disney’s death in 1966, a lot of Disney movies suffered critically and financially because the company decided to focus more on the art than its story. Creators looked towards legendary Disney movies like Snow White and Star Wars to see how even with the outdated technology, the movie is still well-liked by the mass.

The Story of the Toys

The family-friendly series revolves around anthropomorphic toys trying to resolve their problems without being seen by the humans. The Toy Story movies can be considered as a buddy film, where the two main characters, Buzz Lightyear and Sheriff Woody Pride, take the lead in solving the plot’s conflict.

Toy Story

The first movie introduces all to toy and human characters to the audience. In the beginning, there was a slight rivalry between Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Tim Allen) and Sheriff Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks). Buzz believes that he is an actual space ranger while Woody is set on being Andy’s favorite toy. Everything goes awry when the toys are captured by Sid, Andy’s scary and destructive neighbor. Buzz and Woody then set aside their differences in order to bring all the captured toys to safety.

Toy Story 2

In the first sequel, Woody’s arm was accidentally ripped and Andy leaves to camp without him. In the fear of being sold at a yard sale, he rescues another one of Andy’s broken toy only to be stolen by a toy collector. Woody found out that he is a collectible from the 1950’s and the toy collector plan to auction him in a toy museum in Tokyo. Buzz and the gang tries to rescue the kidnapped toys but he encountered another Buzz Lightyear toy who then pretended to be him.

Toy Story 3

The third sequel follows the toy friends as Andy prepares to go to college. While Andy intends to take Woody with him to college, he puts Buzz and the others in a plastic bag to be taken into storage. Andy’s mom then accidentally mistook the bag as a trash bag and threw it in the curb to be picked up by the truck. They managed to escape and ended up at a daycare where they encountered Lotso and his toy followers. Lotso turned out to be more menacing than he looked and Buzz and the toys must find a way to return back home to Woody and Andy.

Toy Story 4

The fourth sequel is going to be released in 2019 and it will follow Bo Peep and answer as to why she was absent in the third movie. Just like the third movie, it will also be directed by Joh Lasseter and audience will see the return of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen as Woody and Buzz respectively. Other toys will also be featured in Toy Story 4 with the exception of Mr. Potato Head due to the death of Don Rickles in early 2017.

The Toy Story series is undoubtedly on of the greatest animated films of all time. This is apparent because of its plot and the technology that it used. The series have become the inspiration of many merchandises like Buzz and Woody toys and action figures, clothing, and stationery.
