Directed by Yaguchi Shinobu (Swing Girls), this hilarious and heartwarming 2001 sports comedy about a bunch of high school boys who take up synchronized swimming received eight nominations at the Japan Academy Awards and won a Best Newcomer trophy for heartthrob Tsumabuki Satoshi (Nada Sou Sou). Water Boys not only launched Tsumabuki Satoshi to fame, it also provided a start for many other newcomer actors, most notably Hiroshi Tamaki (Nodame Cantabile, Midnight Eagle). Yazawa Ai's extremely popular manga comes to life in NANA, the exciting new film starring popular singer Nakashima Mika and Miyazaki Aoi! Released in 2005, NANA tells the story of two twenty-year-old women with the same name, but drastically different personalities.

First up, there's Osaki Nana (Nakashima Mika), a calm, cool, and collected punk rock singer who struts into Tokyo's underground punk scene looking to hit the big time. While Nana's got some ex-boyfriend issues that she's eager to put behind her, she won't allow that personal drama to interfere with her big dream. In fact, Nana's not going to stop until she's conquered Japan as the nation's top rock star! The other "Nana" of the title is Komatsu Nana (TV actress Miyazaki Aoi), who is alternatively called Hachi. Cute and cheerful, Hachi led a somewhat sheltered life and has a bad habit of falling in love too quickly. She had some relationship problems in the past, but when she falls for her high school pal Junko, she decides to follow him to Tokyo when he gets admitted to an art design school. By moving to the big city, she hopes to find love and happiness in this new locale.

By pure chance, Nana and Hachi end up meeting on a train, and thanks to a chain of coincidences involving the number seven, the two of them end up sharing the same apartment. Its number? 707! So even with all the twists of fate in their favor, can these two very different people live under the same roof and get along? And will they eventually find the happiness they've dreamed for so long? The answers are revealed in NANA, director Kentarou Ootani's winning film adaptation of the popular girl's comic!

Toho Once in a Summer Standard Edition (Japan Version)

First love comes and goes as fleetingly as summer, but the memories stay forever...

Lee Byung Hun (A Bittersweet Life) and Soo Ae (Love Letter) star in this moving romance about ten days of love that spans thirty years of time. The sophomore film from No Manners director Jo Geun Sik, Once in a Summer jumps back and forth from the present day to that fateful summer thirty years ago when the leads first meet. In 1969, Korea was in the midst of great economic changes and political turbulence under the Park Chung Hee regime; set against such chaotic times, the film brings out remarkably simple and genuine sentiments with a heartwarming, yet heartbreaking love story. Jo's lens beautifully captures the contrast between present and past, pastoral countryside and urban Seoul, and Lee Byung Hun convincingly portrays his character both in reckless youth and wizened age.

In the summer of 1969, university student Yoon Suk Young (Lee Byung Hun) goes to the countryside through a volunteer program. Coming from a wealthy but strict family, the laid-back youth revels in the simplicity of rural life, especially when he meets local librarian Jung In (Soo Ae). Suk Young immediately falls in love with the charming Jung In, and in ten days of acquaintance, they form a lifetime of memories. Jung In's cheerful front, however, hides a bitter story; her parents defected to North Korea when she was younger, and she continues to live in the shadow of her parents' actions. When Jung In travels to Seoul with Suk Young, the couple get swept up and torn apart by the political tensions of the time.

Written, Produced, Directed by and starring acclaimed Japanese author Mishima Yukio, Yukoku, roughly translated as "worry about the state of the nation" is a rare and powerful short film. It tells the true story of high-ranking naval officer Takeyama, who took is own life in the wake of an attempted military coup in 1936. This silent film is shot in stark black and white, echoing the traditions of Noh theatre, using a minimalist setting and just two actors - Mishima as the general and Tsuruoka Yoshiko as his wife Reiko.

The film has very rarely been seen, as Mishima's wife effectively banned it and ordered the destruction of all existing prints, after the events depicted resonated deeply with her after the nationalistic Mishima took his own life in eerily similar fashion in 1970. The film survived however and is now presented in a beautifully restored two-disc set where it can take its place as a revered chapter of Japanese cinematic history.

Special Features:

  • English inter-titled version & French inter-titled version of the film
  • "Yukio Mishima's 2 days"
  • "Yukoku" album
  • "Mishima Yukio's world"

Toho GODZILLA FINAL WARS Special Edition (Japan Version)
    RM 341.50
Toho Studios celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the very first Godzilla film with the December 2004 release of the highly anticipated sequel, Godzilla: Final Wars, the 28th and supposedly last film in the long-running and much beloved monster series. This time around, Versus director Kitamura Ryuhei grabs hold of the directorial reins and applies his trademark visual style to the legendary Godzilla franchise. Essentially drawing material from two earlier movies in the series (Godzilla vs. Monster Zero and Destroy All Monsters to be exact), Godzilla Final Wars seeks to be the Godzilla movie to end all Godzilla movies, an intention made clear from its over-the-top premise, energetic performances, and wall-to-wall monster battles!

The film begins with Godzilla becoming trapped in ice after a battle in the Antarctic Circle. But while Godzilla hibernates for a while, things start to heat up when an alien race arrives on planet earth looking to enslave humankind. With things taking a turn for the worse, it's up to a group of paramilitary super-mutants to thwart the aliens' plans for global domination. But when the aliens start unleashing hordes of giant monsters on many of the world's most famous cities (including Shanghai, Sydney, and New York City, among others), it's up to the legendary King of the Monsters to enter the fray, taking on all challengers in a series of globe-trotting monster mashes, including one with his American counterpart from the 2000 Roland Emmerich/Dean Devlin film! Featuring contemporary CGI mixed with traditional special effects, Godzilla: Final Wars is a no-holds-barred kaiju fight fest, featuring loads of classic monsters that every die-hard Godzilla fan will be sure to recognize! Angilas, Mothra, Rodan, Gigan, King Ghidorah, and even Godzilla's son, Minilla, all make appearances, so your favorite is sure to be in Godzilla: Final Wars, a wild rollercoaster thrill ride that ends the Godzilla series with a bang!

Based on a play by Maxim Gorky, also entitled Lower Depths, Kurosawa shifts the stage from Russia to Japan's Edo period in this comedic drama. True to the title, the story takes place in a hole - a bleak tenement buried in a waste-filled landscape. The characters lives' themselves represent the bottom of a pit as well, as all of them have, one way or another, hit bottom. It is in this setting that the characters wage their fight against the miseries of life, living out their hopes and dreams with a vigor and life-force that remains strong despite their surroundings.

In this special series, the films of Akira Kurosawa have been restored and remastered on DVD, offering the highest quality video and audio experience available.. Scene chapters are set according to the scene divisions appearing on Kurosawa's screenplays. The keepcase is housed in a handsome box. This edition also contains a booklet including a poster gallery and other promotional materials for the film. Special features include a making-of documentary and trailer(s).

If you enjoyed the American box office hit The 40 Year Old Virgin with Steve Carell, then this similarly-themed Japanese comedy might just be right up your alley! Television director Murakami Shosuke makes his feature length directorial debut with the unconventional, "romantically-challenged" romantic comedy, Densha Otoko!

Based on a supposed true story, the film stars Yamada Takayuki (from Water Boys and Crying Out Love in the Center of the World) as a twentysomething computer nerd who goes by the chat room screen named "Densha Otoko" ("Train Man"). Out of nowhere, he soon finds himself in an unfamiliar role as "protector" when he ends up saving a woman from the advances of a drunken salaryman (Osugi Ren) on a commuter train. Miki Nakatani (from Ring 2) takes on the role of a beautiful office lady who eventually takes a slight interest in this socially-inept otaku. A complete moron when it comes to the ladies, this young computer freak would rather stay in his fantasy land of anime, manga, toys, and computer games than face the real world. Thus, when faced with the proposition of dating this new woman, he turns to the anonymous chatroom pals for support, asking for tips on what just exactly he should do to win this woman's heart.

Densha Otoko is ultimately a nice guy, but for whatever reason, things just haven't happened for him yet in the romance department. Despite his shyness, he's definitely looking to make some changes in his personal life. But will their advice pay off? Can there be chemistry between these two vastly different people? And is there any chance that this guy will actually grow up? The answers await in Densha Otoko, a curious spin on love, life, relationships, and the unabashed glory of otaku geekiness!

Memories of the 2nd World War

Shinoda Masahiro's Shonen Jidai ("Youthful Days") revolves around primary school student Kazama Shinji (Fujita Tetsuya) who is transferred to another school during the final days of the 2nd World War. Shinji's new class representative Ohara Takeshi (Horioka Yuji) often has to use forceful means to insure discipline and order. One day Shinji is bullied and Takeshi rushes to his aid causing the two boys to turn into the closest of friends while their class mates are silently planning to kick Takeshi out of his position

Mainly revolving around friendship and the problem of growing up within a small war infested town, Shonen Jidai ("Youthful Days") is based on the Akutagawa award-winning novel by Kashiwabara Hyozo. The movie itself was honored with the trophies for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Script during the 14th Japanese Oscar presentation.

This version comes with DVD features including the movie's trailer plus a memo pad.

Yukisada Isao, the director of Crying Out Love, In The Center Of The World returns with another heart-breaking melodrama of epic proportions. Haru no Yuki (or Spring Snow) is set during the 1920s and tells the story of Matsugae Kiyoaki (played by Tsumabuki Satoshi, Lorelei and Waterboys), a young rich idealist, whose family's wealth have imbued him with a selfish arrogance that betrays his true nature. The object of much of his disdain is the beautiful Satoko (Takeuchi Yuko, Heaven's Bookstore), daughter of an old aristocratic family higher on the social scale than his. Both sets of parents are keen for the pair to marry as it would restore the wealth and status of both sides. Satoko has been in love with Kiyoaki for some time now, as he regularly comes to her house to learn how to behave more gracefully. However she would not dare profess her love to him, as she fears rejection.

Little does Satoko know that Kiyoaki feels the same way, but his pride stops him from speaking his mind, instead suggesting she marries a Siamese prince who is in town for private study. When the Prince proposes and the engagement is blessed by the Emperor himself, it seems that any hope of the couple being together is lost, but it is this moment that Kiyoaki chooses to finally act on his feelings for Satoko. But is he too late? Will he be able to break off her engagement without upsetting and disgracing all the families involved? And what other dark clouds loom on the horizon? Find out in Yukisada Isao's epic melodrama of class, status and love.

Veteran movie director Akira Kurosawa who was responsible for such cinematic masterpieces like "The Seven Samurai" and "Rashomon" invested ten years of his life only for the preparation of this grand monumental epic!

Based loosely on William Shakespeare's King Lear, Kurosawa's masterfully directed film tells the story of 16th century warlord. When Lord Hidetora (Tatsuya Nakadai) suggests to pass on his kingdom to his three sons one of them warns him that this will lead to an inevitable power struggle among themselves. The relevant son is therefore banished and the empire is split up among the remaining two sons. However, what was foretold earlier turns out to be true as an unstoppable strife for ultimate power ensues

Toho Shining Boy & Little Randy Special Edition (Japan Version - English Subtitles)
    RM 273.60
Kawage Shunsaku makes his feature length directorial debut with Shining Boy and Little Randy, a bittersweet tale of a young boy and his pet elephant! Known in Japan as Hoshini Natta Shonen, the film stars Yagira Yuya, winner of the Best Actor prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his work in Nobody Knows, as Tetsu, a lonely teenager with an extraordinary home life. Unlike most kids, Tetsu lives on Hokkaido animal ranch run by his mother (Tokiwa Takako) and his stepfather (Takahashi Katsumi), both of whom make their living by renting out their animals for work in television and film. With a stable of creatures that includes everything from dogs and cats to even a chimp, one would think this kind of fantasy life would n appeal to a boy like Tetsu, but unfortunately, his family's unusual business becomes a sore point at school, as he is constantly teased by bullies.

To liven up their sagging business, the family purchases an elephant, and Tetsu quickly comes to like the new arrival. A second elephant named Randy is soon added to the mix, but quickly proves impossible for Tetsu to take care of. Initially, Tetsu is discouraged, but when he learns of a school in Thailand for elephant riders, he begs his mother to let him enroll. She eventually agrees, and Tetsu sets off for a new life, full of various trials and tribulations. With his folksy, tough-talking grandma (Baisho Mitsuko) and cute schoolmate Emi (Yu Aoi) cheering him on, Tetsu seems ready for this new challenge, but what happens next, no audience member will anticipate! Featuring a shocking twist sure to leave viewers talking about it long after the film is over, Kawage Shunsaku's Shining Boy and Little Randy is a winning, unconventional film that is certain to gain an even larger audience on DVD!

This special edition includes THX sound, making-of documentary, cast interviews, deleted scenes, music video from Ryuichi Sakamoto and more! Bonus extra (first pressing only): Paper-made eco-package includes THX Optimizer glasses.
