The most common materials that are used to make the fabric of art canvases are cotton, linen, or a combination of both. There are many types of canvases that you can purchase in the art store or online such as primed or unprimed canvases and stretched or pre-stretched. Depending on the type of canvas you choose to use to paint on, you should always protect the essential material for your painting. Here are a few ways to store different types of artist canvas.
Unused canvas fabric
If there are a few canvases that are left unused, it is important for you to properly safe keep it. This is so that when you take it out for you next art project, it is still usable. Firstly, roll the canvas around a firm center and cover it with a cloth to protect it from collecting dust. Make sure that the place where the canvas is stored is away from direct sunlight or exposed moisture or humidity.
Stretched and unused canvas
Always store stretched and unused canvases upright, making it stand along one edge. If you own more than one canvas, you can store it by stacking it face-to-face or back-to-back. The front side of the canvas should always touch the front side of another canvas. Never stack canvases on top of each other as it might lead to warping as well as causing to sag. Other than that, avoid storing it in places where it is difficult for you to control the temperature and where there is no good ventilation such as a garage or an attic.
Stretched and used canvas
Once you are done with your artwork, it is also advisable to properly store them. Firstly, wrap the finished artwork in clean wrapping paper to protect it from dust and other pollutants. Similar to storing an unused canvas, you should stack the painted canvas vertically against a wall, facing one direction. However, you should avoid placing it face-to-face as there’s a high chance that your paintings might stick together. Always stack the canvases according to its size. It is preferable for the larger canvases to be stacked vertically against a wall, facing one direction, while the smaller ones may be placed in front.
Before storing the canvas, ensure that any eye screws, nails, or wires at the back of the canvas are removed. This will ideally prevent any poking, impressions, stains or accidental tearing while the canvas is stacked with other paintings. If possible, make use of storage blocks or foam support where it can be placed between canvases.
On the other hand, oil paintings need extra care while storing as it takes a longer time to fully dry. This can be done by placing the canvas in a brightly lit room for a few hours of the day. This is because; oil paint will turn yellowish if it is left to dry in a dark environment.
