Sony Ericsson—a joint venture of two coincidental crises

Sony Ericsson is a joint venture established on October 1, 2001 by the Japanese consumer electronics giant Sony Corporation and Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson to produce mobile phones. Sony Ericsson was formed because of two coincidental crises faced by the two firms.

Ericsson was a major telecommunications manufacturer with huge success from 1930s till mid 1990s as mobile telephone demand increased tremendously. Ericsson even became a global leader with 17% share of sales, with sales up to 32 million in 1999. However, the success was short-lived as its summer semi-annual report in 1998 was showing slower invoicing and price press. The demand for mobile phones was shifting to cheaper, less advanced models made by Finnish company Nokia, who had a stronger eye for market segmentation, more efficient production and better design. So, Ericsson was facing a crisis as consumers quickly shifted towards cheaper and durable Nokia.

Sony on the other hand was finding difficulties in its venture into the mobile market. Even though Sony corporation had its expertise in electronics, mobile telecommunications at that time was a fairly new field for the Japanese firm. Furthermore, it was time for Sony to penetrate into the mobile technology (don’t want to lose out to the advancement in technology, right?). So, this Sony Ericsson venture enable both firms to combine Sony's consumer electronics expertise with Ericsson's technological knowledge in the communications sector.

In August 2001, Sony Ericsson completed the merger and started operations with a workforce of 3,500 employees. Sony Ericsson focused in making mobile phones include: music, camera, business (web and email), design, eco-friendly and budget focused phones.
