What secrets lie deep in the buried forest? Veteran filmmaker Oguri Kohei, the director of such films as The Sting of Death and Sleeping Man, helms The Buried Forest (a.k.a. Umoregi), one of a select group of Japanese films entered in competition at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival. With a cinematic look seemingly pulled straight from yesteryear, the film kicks off by focusing on a high school girl named Machi (Karen). To break up the monotony of summer, Machi decides that she and her friends should have some fun and start telling each other stories. Machi begins the game by telling a story about a camel coming to town and, soon after, the other two girls join in, each weaving their own intriguing tales. In the meantime, the town rebel San-chan (Asano Tadanobu, from Last Life in the Universe and Ichi the Killer) spends his time cruising around town in his red sports car and hanging out with his biker punk pals. Even so, the wildest thing they've ever done is hold up the town's sole convenience store. Then there's the package from Brazil that holds an enormous egg that supposedly came from a beast that's been extinct for years. And what of the old woman (Sakamoto Sumiko) who's being sent to a nursing home while hoping for a cure for her ailments? Even stranger, thanks to a torrential rainfall, the villagers discover an underground cavern containing fossilized trees buried in a volcanic eruption. How will all these seemingly unrelated narrative strands be tied together? Find out in The Buried Forest, Oguri Kohei's beautiful, masterfully crafted motion picture!

Shochiku Home Video Love and Honor (English Subtitled) (Japan Version) at 164.90 MYR from YesAsia
Shochiku Home Video Love and Honor (English Subtitled) (Japan Version)
RM 164.90
Renowned director Yamada Yoji brings his acclaimed samurai trilogy to a beautiful close with Love and Honor (a.k.a. Bushi no Ichibun). Like Twilight Samurai and Hidden Blade, Love and Honor is based on the works of Fujisawa Shuhei, and the story follows a familiar arc, portraying a samurai's struggle for honor in the face of harrowing challenges. While his previous two films were helmed by screen veterans Sanada Hiroyuki and Nagase Masatoshi, for Love and Honor Yamada chose pop icon Kimura Takuya as the film's star. The casting initially drew skepticism as, though Kimura had appeared in many television dramas, he had little film experience. Kimura, however, made the role his own, delivering a career-defining performance. Under Yamada's assured hand, the rich aesthetics and restrained acting give way to an increasingly emotional and intense story that culminates with a gripping sword duel. Winning both at the box office and with critics, Love and Honor just might be the best of the trilogy. Though he is of low rank with modest means, young samurai Mimura Shinnojo (Kimura Takuya) has a fairly happy and stable life with his loving wife Kayo (Dan Rei). All this comes crashing down, however, when Shinnojo, as the lord's food taster, eats poisoned shellfish and becomes blind. Distressed by his inability to support the household, he turns violent and resentful, and even considers ending his own life to redeem his name. At the urging of unsympathetic relatives, Kayo seeks the assistance of captain Shimada Toya (Bando Mitsugoro), who uses his influence to help Shinnojo retain his income and rank. As the rumors begin to get louder, Shinnojo becomes increasingly troubled that he may be losing his wife and honor to another man...

Director Yamada Yoji reunites with Yoshinaga Sayuri, the star of About Her Brother and Kabei - Our Mother, for the poignant drama Nagasaki: Memories of My Son set in postwar Nagasaki. The veteran actress plays a midwife who lost her son three years ago during the atomic bombing. On the day she tells herself it's time to let him go, her son suddenly appears again to reminisce about their times together. Arashi member Ninomiya Kazunari (Letters from Iwo Jima) won Best Actor at the 39th Japan Academy Prize for his portrayal of the son. Kuroki Haru (Little House) and Asano Tadanobu (Kabei - Our Mother) also co-star in this moving examination of familial love, the pain of loss, and the indelible effects of war. This edition comes with a bonus disc of special features and a 24-page booklet.

Japanese rock star Gackt makes his Hollywood film debut in Bunraku, an exhilarating action spectacular from writer-director Guy Moshe. Inspired by the Japanese traditional art of puppet theater (which is what the film's title refers to), Bunraku is an inventive, audacious mix of spaghetti westerns, chabara cinema, and neo-noir. In addition to Gackt as a lone swordsman, Bunraku also features an impressive cast of Hollywood stars, including Josh Harnett (I Come With the Rain) as a cowboy seeking revenge, Woody Harrelson (2012) as a bartender, Ron Perlman (Hellboy) as a villainous crime boss and Demi Moore (Ghost) as a dangerous femme fatale. In a future post-war world, guns have been outlawed, and people can only fight each other with primitive weapons like swords. One day, a nameless drifter (Josh Harnett) and a samurai (Gackt) arrive at a city looking to settle their respective scores with the Woodcutter (Ron Perlman), the crime lord that rules the city. The two are brought together by a bartender (Woody Harrelson), who always has some wisdom to offer. With other groups of people with their own agendas arriving in town, an violent battle for the control of the city is about to begin. This edition includes the film on both Blu-ray and DVD. It also comes with a bonus DVD containing an interview with Gackt and trailers.

Takita Yojiro's excellent 2003 samurai epic takes place in Meiji-era Japan, when the few remaining samurai were forced to choose sides and fight for either the Emperor or the Tokugawa Shogunate (a time period familiar to American audiences from The Last Samurai, but explored with more complexity and nuance here). Nakai Kiichi stars as Yoshimura Kanichiro, a principled Bushido warrior whose difficult decisions and complicated path are skillfully revealed through flashback.

Shochiku Home Video The Land of Hope (Blu-ray) (Japan Version)
RM 244.10
Immediately following the March 11 disaster in northeast Japan, director Sono Sion (Love Exposure) headed to the disaster zone to film Himizu, a bleak youth drama that concludes on a positive outlook for the future. Sono continues that outlook for post-disaster Japan in The Land of Hope, possibly the filmmaker's most optimistic film yet. Once again shot in the disaster zone in northeast Japan, the somber drama looks at life after an earthquake in a fictional prefecture sets of another nuclear crisis. While the film's setting is fictional, Sono's depiction of nuclear paranoia and unwavering optimism is clearly a reflection of post-Fukushima Japan. The Land of Hope may be restrained compared to Sono's previous films, but it remains a powerful, emotional story of nation standing tall in the face of disasters. The Ono and the Suzuki families are neighbors living in a rural town of Nagashima Prefecture (a fictional place). One day, a strong earthquake strikes the area, causing an explosion at the nearby nuclear power plant. While the Suzukis decide to evacuate to the shelter, Ono Yasuhiko (Osao Natsuyagi) is determined to stay with his senile wife in his family home, which lies right behind the mandatory evacuation line. When Yasuhiko's son Yoichi (Murakami Jun) discovers that his wife Izumi (Kagurazaka Izumi) is pregnant, Yasuhiko forces them to evacuate, leaving the two elders all alone. Despite being away from the evacuation zone, Izumi remains paranoid of the nuclear fallout and its effects on her soon-to-be-born child.

Director Togashi Shin (Night of the Shooting Stars) offers another touching entry into the romance genre with Tenshi no Tamago, a.k.a. The eclectic filmmaker best known for mysteries likes The Inerasable and The Snow White Murder Case goes full period drama with The Magnificent Nine. Based on a novel by Isoda Michifumi, the ensemble comedy-drama rounds up both fresh faces and Nakamura's past leads to form his most star-studded cast yet that includes Abe Sadao, Eita, Tsumabuki Satoshi, Takeuchi Yuko, Matsuda Ryuhei, Yamazaki Tsutomu, Yuda Chibai and even Olympic gold medal figure skater Hanyu Yuzuru in his acting debut. Juzaburo (Abe Sadao) lives in an impoverished rural town where most of the residents struggle to get by due to the heavy taxes levied by the local government. Tea grower Tokuheiji (Eita), who has recently moved back to town, suggests loaning a large sum to the government and then using the interest to help the townspeople. Though Tokuheiji made the remark in jest, Juzaburo takes the idea to heart and puts the plan into action by pooling resources with other more well-off residents to raise money for the loan. As word spreads, more people join the scheme, including Juzaburo's estranged younger brother (Tsumabuki Satoshi), but the plan begins to balloon out of his control. This edition comes with a bonus DVD of special features.

Seven years after All Around Us, acclaimed writer-director Hashiguchi Ryosuke makes a welcome return with the raw and realistic human drama Three Stories of Love, which was nominated for Best Film at the 10th Asian Film Awards and selected as the Best Film of 2015 by the 89th Kinema Junpo Awards. Working with a main cast of mostly no-name actors selected through workshop auditions, Hashiguchi offers an acute examination of love, loneliness and alienation. As indicated by the title, the film weaves together a trio of stories about a grieving man (Shinohara Atsushi) overwhelmed by the murder of his wife, an elitist gay lawyer (Ikeda Ryo) with a miserable love life, and a housewife (Narushima Toko) stuck with an indifferent partner and an over-bearing mother-in-law.
