From kings to fashionistas from all over the world wants a piece of this influential French fashion designer who impacted the fashion industry in the 1960s to this very day. Saint Laurent was founded by Yves Henri Donat Matthieu Saint Laurent 1966. Growing up as a homosexual kid was never easy for him for he was often bullied by him schoolmates but he found comfort in the world of fashion. His world immediately changed when his mom arranged a meeting with Michael de Brunhoff, the editor of French Vogue who later on introduced him to Christian Dior. Mentored under the great Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent style and designs matured and gained the attention of many. In 1966, the Saint Laurent line was born and immediately became the top names in the fashion world. Having placed their mark everywhere across the globe, it does not come as a surprise that Saint Laurent attracted quite a huge following here in Malaysia.
A brand that does not fail to impress
Saint Laurent has indeed placed themselves in the hearts of many individuals. He was particularly known for feminising the basic shapes of the male wardrobe, setting new standards for the world of fashion. His most famous work is the “Le Smoking” tuxedo jacket, sheer blouses, peasant blouses, bolero jackets, pantsuits and smocks. Some of the models and A-listers from Hollywood include Halle Berry, Beyonce, Michelle Williams, Lou Doillon, Jate Moss, Hanne Gaby, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anne Hathaway, Miranda Kerr, Elizabeth Hurley, Rihanna and Resse Witherspoon to name a few. Being a successful designer that he is, it does not come as a surprise that Yves Saint Laurent became the first living fashion designer to exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and in 1999 he was awarded a “Lifetime Achievement” award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Later on in 2007, Yves Saint Laurent was made a Grand Officer de la Legion d’honneur by French President Nicholas Sarkozy.
The most iconic French brand
Many modern designers have tried their best to recreate Saint Laurent’s classic designs, but the originals are still any women’s wardrobe favourite. Two of his greatest impact to the fashion industry was the “Trapeze Dress” and the “Le Smoking”. The “Trapeze Dress” was debuted in Yves Saint Laurent first collection as the head designer for Dior. It immediately rose to international fame for that dress was unique in its own way, fitted shoulder and flared outwards from below the shoulders giving it a softer look. The “Le Smoking” was the first ever classic tuxedo suit that was introduced for women. It increased in popularity, allowing women everywhere to walk with their heads held high, filled with confidence in this male dominated world.
