Perhaps one of the most iconic and well-recognized shoe series, the Nike Air Jordan has had a long history of constant redesigns, re-releases, and models. Named after the NBA legend Michael Jordan, the Nike Air Jordan has become more than just a basketball shoe, but a fashion and a pop culture icon, and a collectible. Some are so rare, that it could go from a couple thousand dollars to a hundred thousand per pair.
When Michael Jordan skyrocketed to NBA fame in 1984, Nike quickly collaborated with the athlete to create one of the most iconic shoe series in history. Along with product designers Peter Moore and Bruce Kilgore, Nike was able to transform Michael’s original draft into one of the most collected shoe series in history.
The first Air Jordan came out in 1984 with the AJ One, originally in red and black to match Jordan’s team the Chicago Bulls. Following its success came the AJ II which is made in Italy, giving the shoe a luxurious feel. Continuing its rapid demand, Nike again released another edition of the Air Jordan called the AJ III which featured the first original jumpman logo on its heel and was said to be Michael’s favorite shoe. It was only a matter of time when the next edition came out, the AJ IV, the first Air Jordans to have different colorways.
Throughout the years, Nike has been producing and reproducing Air Jordan’s with over 30 different editions from 1985 all throughout the 80s, the 90s, the early 2000s, until today. This iconic shoe was so successful that the brand has released limited edition models that many shoe collectors have been itching to have.
As an iconic shoe, it is no surprise that Nike Air Jordans have become collectibles. Rare and limited edition models have been produced for a hefty price, some even going up to a hundred thousand dollars for a pair.
Nike Air Jordan 2 OG
For a whopping $31,000, you can have this original Nike Air Jordan 2 OG but this model is not that popular compared to other Air Jordan’s today because of its color. It’s absolutely rare to find a pair today in pristine condition because of poor maintenance from past owners. This 28-year-old shoe is old enough to buy drinks, it deserves more respect.
Nike Air Jordan 12 OVO
If you think the first one was expensive, then the Nike Air Jordan 12 OVO will definitely take your breath away. Priced at $100,000 this iconic shoe model was originally owned by famous rapper Drake and was given away to a fan who later sold it on eBay for 100 grand.
Nike Air Jordan 12 (Flu Game)
Perhaps one of the most expensive Air Jordans today, the Nike Air Jordan 12 (Flu Game) edition costs around $104,000. What made this shoe expensive is that it was personally worn by Michael Jordan in his Chicago Bulls vs Utah Jazz 1997 game. Despite being sick with flu, his Airness MJ mustered 15 points during the last quarter which lead to Bull’s victory.
