After venturing to other genres with The Matsugane Potshot Affair and My Back Page, acclaimed indie director Yamashita Nobuhiro returns to the dark comedy genre that kicked off his career with The Drudgery Train. Based on the Akutagawa Prize-winning novel by Nishimura Kenta, this offbeat comedy follows the adventures of a 19-year-old deadbeat loser laborer who strikes an unlikely friendship with a newly hired co-worker. In addition to Moriyama Mirai (Love Strikes) playing the drunken laborer, The Drudgery Train also stars Kora Kengo (Norwegian Wood) as the new hire and former AKB48 member Maeda Atsuko as a local bookstore clerk who becomes a love interest. At just 19 years old, laborer Kitamichi (Moriyama Mirai) has already built up a nasty drinking habit and an obsession with peep shows. He has no social skills whatsoever and has alienated anyone who has seen him drunk. Kitamachi's life begins to turn around when he is befriended by newcomer Kusakabe (Kora Kengo), a decent young man who provides Kitamachi with much-needed positive influence. With Kusakabe's help, Kitamachi even becomes friends with Sakurai (Maeda Atsuko), a bookstore clerk whom Kitamachi has a crush on. However, Kitamachi will realize that life never walks a smooth path, especially for someone like him. This edition includes audio commentary, making of, cast and director interviews, stage events and trailers.

Five men, one room, one murder mystery. It's not quite 12 Angry Men, but Kisaragi's Five Goofy Men do an admirable job of spinning speculative dialogue into cinematic gold. Helmed by television director Sato Yuichi (Attention Please, Water Boys) with a screenplay by Always - Sunset on Third Street writer Kosawa Ryota, Kisaragi is equal parts slapstick and suspense, with some keen observations about friendship, manhood, and life thrown in. The loopy, atmospheric, and impulsive story is driven by the chemistry and ramblings of its quirky characters, and Sato finds a perfect cast in heartthrobs Shun Oguri (Neighbor No. 13, Sukiyaki Western Django) and Koide Keisuke (Kimi ni Shika Kikoenai), character actor Kagawa Teruyuki (Yureru), comedian Tsukaji Muga (Mamiya Kyodai), and popular everyman Yusuke Santamaria (Udon, Bayside Shakedown 2). Kisaragi was named Best Picture at the 50th Blue Ribbon Awards, annd nominated for Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor (Kagawa Teruyuki) at the 31st Japan Academy Awards. One year after the suicide of C-list model Miki, five of her fans come together for a commemorative meeting: fan club leader Iemoto (Shun Oguri), Oda Yuji (Yusuke Santamaria), Snake (Koide Keisuke), Yasuo (Tsukaji Muga), and Ichigo Musume (Kagawa Teruyuki). Sitting down together for the first time, they reminisce about their idol, wondering how someone so bright and beautiful could have possibly taken her own life. It just doesn't make sense. That's when they reach a revelation - she must have been murdered! The five heatedly discuss her death, expressing their suspicions and weighing the many clues and possibilities. The more they talk, the more the case takes shape in their minds, and the closer they come to the truth...

Hasegawa Kazuhiko has only directed two films in the last thirty years. But in Hasegawa's case, that is enough to put him in the league of Japan's finest filmmakers. Grappling controversial topics and delivering with a terrifying intensity, Hasegawa's films are impossible to forget. His 1979 cult film The Man Who Stole the Sun hit Japanese cinema much like the bomb that its troubled protagonist constructed, while his masterful 1976 debut Seishun no Satsujinsha tells a haunting story of bloody patricide. Adapted from a Nakagami Kenji novel which was itself based on a true story, Seishun no Satsujinsha (a.k.a. The Youth Killer) takes the familiar problems of youth apathy, generation conflict, and domestic violence to a shocking conclusion. Hasegawa cuts no corners with the realistic, emotionally brutal scenes of murder, and Mizutani Yutaka and Ichihara Etsuko both give amazing performances. One morning Jun (Mizutani Yutaka) gets into an angry argument with his father (Uchida Ryohei) over his girlfriend (Harada Mieko) whom his father disapproves of. In a fit of bloody rage, Jun kills his father. He decides to turn himself into the police, but his mother (Ichihara Etsuko) stops him. Eerily calm after the shock, she suggests that they dispose of the body, and then move to another place where no one will know them. When Jun moves the body out of the house, his mother suddenly changes moods again and points a knife at him, as tragedy begets tragedy.

Once a struggling scriptwriter himself, Caf Isobe writer-director Yoshida Keisuke channels his struggle through a woman with a single-minded goal to become a scriptwriter in dramedy The Workhorse and the Bigmouth. Kumiko Aso (Instant Swamp) stars as Michiyo, a hardworking scriptwriter (the "Workhorse" in the film's title) who is starting to realize that she may not have what it takes to be successful. During a scriptwriting course, Michiyo meets Yoshimi (Kanjani8's Yasuda Shota), a younger man who keeps boasting about his writing than actually doing it (earning him the "Bigmouth" in the title). Their pursuit for the film industry doesn't get any better for them, but the odd platonic couple may end up finding some comfort in each other. This edition comes with bonus DVD containing a visual commentary, making of, stage events and trailers.

King Records Ask This of Rikyu (Blu-ray) (Collector's Edition) (Japan Version)
RM 239.10
YesAsia
Fittingly for a film that has so much to do with the idea of beauty, Ask This of Rikyu won the Best Artistic Contribution award at the 2013 Montreal International Film Festival. Directed by Tanaka Mitsutoshi (Castle Under Fiery Skies), the film is based on the Naoki Prize-winning novel by Yamamoto Kenichi and boasts a cast that includes Ichikawa Ebizo (Hara-kiri: Death of a Samurai), Nakatani Miki (The Kiyosu Conference) and Omori Nao (Ichi the Killer). Sen no Rikyu is considered one of the most important historical figures in Japan due to the fact that he mastered the beauty of the tea ceremony. Rikyu served as tea master for warlord Oda Nobunaga and continued to serve in the post under Oda's successor, Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Toyotomi and Rikyu became very close, to the point that Toyotomi essentially gave Rikyu the power to define the tea ceremony. One day, however, Toyotomi ordered Rikyu to commit seppuku. Ask This of Rikyu explores Rikyu's background and why this happened. In the film, after Rikyu (Ichikawa Ebizo) has been ordered to commit seppuku by Toyotomi (Omori Nao), his wife Son (Nakatani Miki) says something that causes Rikyu to recall the experiences and, in particular, a secret that led to his understanding of beauty. The film also posits that Toyotomi ordered Rikyu to commit seppuku because he was threatened by him, and explores how a simple tea master could have inspired such jealousy from a ruler. This edition contains bonus footage including the making of and clips from the Montreal International Film Festival.

After dark comedy Hospitalite, writer-director Fukada Koji tells the gentle story of two young people on the cusp of adulthood searching for themselves in Au revoir l'ete. Rising star Nikaido Fumi (Himizu) plays Sakuko, a young woman who has arrived in a seaside town for summer vacation with her aunt. There, she meets Takashi (Taiga), a "nuclear refugee" who has moved to the town from Fukushima Prefecture to work at his uncle's love hotel. Over the course of two weeks, the pair develops a close bond as those around them fall into various personal crises. A dryly amusing story about love, youth and the loss of innocence, Au revoir l ete has earned critical acclaimed from audiences at film festivals around the world, including the Tokyo International Film Festival, the Rotterdam Film Festival and the Festival des 3 Continents in France.

Zhang Yimou and Gong Li collaborated in many widely acclaimed movies, from Red Sorghum in 1987 to the 1995 movie Shanghai Triad. Like most of these earlier works by Zhang Yimou, The Story of Qiu Ju focuses on ordinary or even repressed Chinese peasants. Zhang makes a very sharp criticism against the bureaucracy and power abuse, which still existed in 1992 when the movie was made. Besides, the film also contrasts the simple peasants with the sophisticated city-dwellers, highlighting problems in China's contemporary socio-political development. The film triumphed at the Venice Film Festival in 1992 to capture the Best Film award, and Gong Li was also crowned Best Actress for her superb performance. An ordinary farmer Qinglai (Liu Peiqi) quarrels with the village's chief (Lei Quesheng) over the building of a storage house for his crop in the field. The village chief kicks Qinglai in the privates. Qinglai gives up and wants the matter to pass, but his wife Qiu Ju (Gong Li) does not. She argues the case to officers first in the county government then the provincial government. The very pregnant Qiu Ju persists for but one reason: she wants justice to be done.

Prolific maverick Sono Sion takes audiences on a strange and magical ride with Love & Peace, an entertaining, off-the-wall opus that blends fantasy, music, satire, kaiju and just plain old weirdness. Suzuki Ryoichi (Hasegawa Hiroki, Attack on Titan) once dreamed of being a rock star, but now he's just a nerdy salaryman at a musical instrument parts company. He's constantly mocked by his boss and colleagues, and has a crush on shy co-worker Terashima Yuko (Aso Kumiko, Love Strikes!). One day, Ryoichi buys a small turtle and names it Pikadon. He grows quite fond of his pet, but after getting laughed at by his co-workers, he flushes the turtle down the toilet. Pikadon travels through the sewer and ends up at a magical lost and found run by an old man (Nishida Toshiyuki, The Kiyosu Conference). The distraught Ryoichi, meanwhile, publicly performs a song about Pikadon that gets mistaken for a protest song. Next thing he knows, he gets picked up by a label and transformed into a star.

Author Yoshida Shuichi (Villain) revisits themes of crime, punishment and redemption in his 2008 novel Sayonara Keikoku. Now, director Omori Tatsushi (Tada's Do-It-All House) adapts the tale of an odd relationship for The Ravine of Goodbye. Onishi Shima (Caterpillar) stars as a man whose dark past is revealed when he is accused of playing a role in the death of a neighbor's daughter. In a performance that has been sweeping film awards in Japan, Yoko Maki (Like Father Like Son) plays the man's wife, whose own tumultuous past is revealed as a result of the scandal. A young child has been murdered, and the mother has been arrested as the prime suspect. When she tells investigators that she's been having an affair with neighbor Shunsuke (Onishi Shima), he becomes a person of interest in the case. Sensing a story on the horizon, reporter Watanabe begins investigating both Shunsuke and his wife Kanako's pasts. In the process, he discovers that their relationship is far more complex than anyone can imagine.

Based on the popular manga by Matsumoto Koji, Higanjima can best be described as Battle Royale meets the vampire world. Volcano High and Crossing director Kim Tae Kyun returns to his genre roots with his Japanese film debut, an action-packed horror-thriller about a group of young people trapped on an island with deadly vampires. This is no Twilight: the vampires are fast and fierce, they travel freely in the daylight, and they have no qualms about killing off any human on the island in all kinds of violent ways. Travel with stars Ishikuro Hideo (Gokusen), Watanabe Dai (Crows Zero), and Mizukawa Asami (Nodame Cantabile) right into the heart of darkness with Higanjima. Akira (Ishikuro Hideo) gets into trouble with a group of thugs, but he is suddenly saved by the mysterious Rei (Mizukawa Asami). She tells him that his long-lost brother Atsushi (Watanabe Dai) has been living on Higanjima, the home of his wife. However, vampires have taken over the island, killing Atsushi's wife and leaving Atsushi to survive there on his own. After an attack by a vampire hitman, Akira decides to go with Rei on a journey to Higanjima to find his brother, and maybe they'll even fight a few vampires along the way. Special Comic Edition Blu-ray includes a 40-page comic by author Matsumoto Koji, a booklet, as well as a bonus DVD with making of, stage events, cast and crew interviews, 9mm Parabellum Bullet (performers of the theme song) interview, and trailers.
