Kam & Ronson Enterprises Co Ltd Catch A Wave (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)
RM 35.40
Beach, ocean, sunshine, and the summer of sixteen wash pleasantly onto shore in the 2006 surfing feature Catch a Wave. This lively youth film is based on a bestselling novel written by Toyoda Kazuma when he was only 16 years old as a documentary of his high school summer. Toyoda himself also adapted the novel into the film's screenplay, ensuring that the story stays young and true to spirit. Catch a Wave marks the feature debut of director Takahashi Nobuyuki who did the film editing for classic J-horrors like Ring, The Grudge, Dark Water, and Retribution and co-directed the popular television drama Water Boys. Teen stars Miura Haruma (Koizora, 14 Year Old Mother), Kimura Ryo (Heat Island, Nodame Cantabile), and Hamada Gaku (Ahiru To Kamo No Coin Locker) play three high school boys who find more than they expect in an unforgettable summer of romance, friendship, and surfing. Catch a Wave also features television star Sakaguchi Kenji (Pride), Kato Rosa (A Cheerful Gang Turns the Earth), and character actor Takenaka Naoto (Nodame Cantabile). Now that school's out, high school friends Taiyo (Miura Haruma), Kosuke (Hamada Gaku), and Seito (Kimura Ryo) are eager to get away from the city - not to mention their parents. They plan to spend their summer at the beach, but on the first day of arrival, the bumbling boys have already managed to lose their house keys. Fortunately, they meet strange old surf shop owner Duke Kawahara (Takenaka Naoto) who takes them in and recruits them to work at his shop in exchange for surfing instruction. And just like that, the three boys have found a new goal for their summer - to Catch a Wave at Shonan Beach.

Doomsday is upon Japan (again) in the thrilling all-star blockbuster 20th Century Boys based on Urasawa Naoki's acclaimed manga. Too big for just one film, 20th Century Boys is being released in three installments over one year's time. The first chapter lays the roots for the visionary trilogy's ambitious tale about a group of friends who emerge as unlikely heroes in the battle against an apocalyptic evil they had unwittingly foretold as children. More than just a good vs. evil doomsday saga, 20th Century Boys makes for a positively epic exercise in filmmaking and storytelling that spans multiple generations and genres, and bites into conspiracy theory, pop culture nostalgia, and spectacular special effects. Helmed by hit-making director Tsutsumi Yukihiko (Memories of Tomorrow), 20th Century Boys is certainly one of the greatest undertakings Japan Cinema has ever seen, with its six billion yen budget and staggeringly long cast list that runs 300 deep. Karasawa Toshiaki (Casshern) leads the ensemble cast that includes Tokiwa Takako (Mamiya Kyodai), Toyokawa Etsushi (The Sinking of Japan), Kagawa Teruyuki (Sukiyaki Western - Django), and Sasaki Kuranosuke (After School). Kenji (Karasawa Toshiaki) used to be a wannabe rocker but, now in his thirties, he's back in his hometown running a convenience store and taking care of his baby niece. All seems quiet and uneventful in Kenji's life, save for the worried whispers about the rise of a cult led by a masked man who calls himself "Friend". The cult's logo seems eerily familiar, as do the news of mysterious deaths and terrorist acts around the world. Back in the summer of 1969, Kenji and his buddies sketched for fun a Book of Prophecy that predicted the world's end. Twenty-eight years later, the scenarios laid out in the Book of Prophecy are coming true one by one, and all fingers point to "Friend". As friends and foes of the past reappear for mankind's last stand, can Kenji fulfill his own prophecy and save the world?

Produced by Oxide Pang, the 2005 Thai thriller The Remaker is, appropriately enough, a remake of Pang's own 1997 debut feature Who is Running?. Directed by Mona Nahm (Be Very Quiet), the intriguing film revolves around two people whose trespasses from past lives tie them together in the present in a deadly karmic cycle. Tom (Andrew Gregson) drives his car off a bridge, but when he wakes up in the hospital after the accident, he is perfectly fine. Instead, the woman who saved him, Pim (Piyada Akaraseranee), suddenly falls into a coma. Soon, Tom begins to experience flashbacks to his previous life, gradually revealing his connections to Pim. As the unfinished story of the past plays out in the present, Tom and Pim must find a way to undo their karma before it's too late.

Kam & Ronson Enterprises Co Ltd The Handsome Suit (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)
RM 35.40
The clothes make the man in the hilarious comedy The Handsome Suit, the first feature from commercial director Hanabusa Tsutomu. Based on a novel by Suzuki Osami, The Handsome Suit serves as a starring vehicle for slight and portly television comedian Tsukaji Muga from The Mamiya Brothers. Tanihara Shosuke (Lovely Complex) plays his handsome counterpart in a side-tickling self-parodying performance. Also co-starring The Mamiya Brothers' Kitagawa Keiko, The Handsome Suit loads in the visual and verbal gags for a laughing good time at the movies. Diner owner Takuro (Tsukaji Muga) is the star in the kitchen with his fabulous cooking skills, but his below-average appearances make him a dud with the ladies. While renting a tux for his friend's wedding, Takuro ends up with a "handsome suit" that magically transforms him into a tall and dashing hunk (Tanihara Shosuke)! Suddenly, the world's at Takuro's feet as he becomes the hottest male model on the scene and the apple of every woman's eyes. But it's not so easy juggling two lives, especially when his suit keeps threatening to malfunction and reveal his true face.

From Takashi Yamazaki, the visionary director behind Juvenille and the sci-fi hit, Returner, comes Always - Sunset On Third Street. No film in 2005 had a higher profile in Japan than Always, which was reflected when it scooped twelve out of a possible thirteen awards at the Japanese Academy Awards in March 2006. The film uses a combination of elaborately constructed sets and cutting edge CGI work to recreate Tokyo in the 1950s. It is a heartfelt, nostalgic look back at a time when the country was changing and developing, soon to experience an economic boom that would forever alter Japanese culture.

When we last left Wai Siu Bo (Stephen Chow), he had just sent the fake Empress Dowager Lung Yi (Sharla Cheung) packing, and was in the process of restoring order to the Emperor's court. But Lung Yi returns to gain revenge, except she's had a massive makeover and now looks like Brigitte Lin! More of Jin Yong's classic novel The Duke of Mt. Deer gets adapted and skewered in Royal Tramp II, the sequel to director Wong Jing's hilarious hit comedy Royal Tramp! Having established himself as an Imperial player, Wai Siu Bo earns plenty of new enemies, including evil kung-fu bad guy Feng Shi Fan (Yen Shi Kwan). But as Wai Siu Bo's fabulous luck would have it, he gets transformed into a powerful kung-fu master with no worldly equal! Now the terror of the martial arts world, Wai Siu Bo sets out to quell a growing rebellion, as well as insult and make a mockery of anyone who dares cross his path. Action director Ching Siu Tung amps the action for this sequel, and the already impressive cast is improved by the addition of Brigitte Lin and the gorgeous Michelle Reis! Stephen Chow is at his droll comic best in Royal Tramp II, a hilarious sequel that easily equals and even surpasses its predecessor!

However, Koharu's wedding day also brings homes Ginko's younger brother Tetsuro (Tsurube Shofukutei), a failed actor and a hard drinker who shows up causing trouble. Chinese films rarely get as big as Sorcerer and the White Snake, from actor-turned-producer Yang Zi and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon producer Chui Po Chu. The latest retelling of The Legend of the White Snake, the US$25 million Sorcerer stars Eva Huang (Kung Fu Hustle) as a lovelorn demon and international superstar Jet Li as a Buddhist monk determined to keep natural law in order at any cost. Hong Kong-based writers Tsang Kan Cheong (Shaolin Soccer) and Szeto Cheuk Han (Mr. Vampire), as well as veteran action director Ching Siu Tung (Swordsman) bring together spectacular fantasy action, state-of-the-art special effects, and a stirring tale of forbidden love for the perfect Chinese blockbuster. In addition to Huang and Li, the stellar all-star cast of Sorcerer also includes Raymond Lam (Jade and the Pearl), Charlene Choi (Twins Effect), Wen Zhang (Ocean Heaven), as well as Vivian Hsu, Miriam Yeung, Chapman To, and Jiang Wu in special cameos. After its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, The Sorcerer and the White Snake was released during the intensely competitive National Day holiday in China and quickly became one of the highest-grossing Chinese films of the year. Snake demons Bai Suzhen (Eva Huang) and Qingqing (Charlene Choi) live in the forest with other animal demons. One day, Suzhen plays a trick on herbalist Xu Xian (Raymond Lam) and causes him to nearly drown. After saving his life, Suzhen realizes that she has fallen in love with Xu Xian, a fact that will not sit well with stern Buddhist monk Fahai (Jet Li). A righteous sorcerer who strongly believes in observing the law of nature, Fahai spends his days capturing demons who have invaded the human world with his trusty disciple Neng Ren (Wen Zhang). When Fahai discovers that Xu Xian has married Suzhen without knowing her true identity, Fahai is determined to keep the two worlds apart - an action that raises the terrifying wrath of Suzhen.

Hong Kong director Herman Yau contributes to the centennial celebration of the Xinhai Revolution with his period kung fu biopic about late-Qing feminist and revolutionary Qiu Jin, whose heroic exploits were pivotal in bringing about the eventual downfall of the imperial regime in China. The maverick director of The Untold Story has long admired the legendary figure, and his entertaining portrayal of her life story on the silver screen admirably balances the historical drama stuff with exhilarating action scenes choreographed by veteran action director Leung Siu Hung (Ip Man). Yau brings back his The Legend is Born - Ip Man star Crystal Huang in the eponymous role, supported by a star-studded cast including Dennis To, Anthony Wong, Kevin Cheng, Rose Chan, Pat Ha, Lam Suet, Xiong Xinxin, Tsui Tin Yau, Wong Yau Nam, and Lollipop-F's A-wei. When the women of her time had their feet bound to please men, Qiu Jin (Crystal Huang) was already questioning the sexual inequality of feudal traditions. Free-spirited and well-educated, she grew up practicing martial arts and was as well versed in poetry as she was in sword-fighting. When this rebellious girl moved to Beijing with her husband (Kevin Cheng), she witnessed how her country was raided and ravaged by foreign powers. With the encouragement of her neighbor Wu Zhiying (Pat Ha), the wife of righteous magistrate Li Zhongyue (Anthony Wong), Qiu Jin left her family behind to pursue study in Japan. There, she met some like-minded schoolmates who shared her ideals, including revolutionary leader Xu Xilin (Dennis To), and secretly joined his anti-Qing cause. After returning to China, Qiu Jin participated in the uprisings staged by Xu Xilin, leading a small group of hot-blooded students against the armed forces of the corrupt Qing government... Kam & Ronson Enterprises Co Ltd Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale Part I (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)
RM 86.30
Few Taiwan films are more anticipated than Wei Te Sheng's 2011 historical epic Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale, based on the true story of the 1930 Wushe Incident, when the aboriginal Seediq peoples rebelled against Japanese imperialist forces. Topping the critical and commercial success of Cape No. 7 would be difficult for Wei Te Sheng, but Taiwan's top-grossing director meets the challenge head-on with this ambitious and powerful two-part epic. Produced by John Woo, Seediq Bale required US$25 million for its lush period detail and riveting action sequences, making it the biggest endeavor in the history of Taiwan cinema. Breaking opening day records, the sweeping blockbuster was Taiwan's highest-grossing homegrown film of 2011 and the winner of Best Film at the 48th Golden Horse Awards. Seediq Bale Part 1 sows the seeds for the film's powerful final conflict, depicting how the Seediq people are demoralized and finally reborn by their continued subjugation by the Japanese. Stripped of their native hunting grounds and forced to work deforesting the very mountains they called home, the rival Seediq tribes rallied together and violently rose up against years of Japanese repression in the 1930 Wushe Incident. Shown in competition at the 68th Venice International Film Festival, Seediq Bale was shot primarily in the Seediq language, with some Mandarin, Taiwanese, and Japanese. Seediq priest Lin Ching Tai stars as the leader of the revolt, legendary warrior Mona Rudao, whose image is on Taiwan's 20NT coin today. Japanese actor Ando Masanobu (The Butcher, The Chef & The Swordsman), television actor and director Umin Boya, Golden Horse Best Supporting Actor winner Bokeh Kosang, Cape No. 7's Tanaka Chie, and singers Landy Wen, Irene Luo, and Vivian Hsu (Hot Summer Days) are among the film's large ensemble cast of name stars and non-professional actors. This release includes Part I of Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale and an interview with John Woo and Wei Te Sheng.

The "Best Partners" return in Aces Go Places 2, the inevitable and equally-as-entertaining sequel to the original Aces Go Places. It seems that King Kong (Sam Hui) and Kodojak (Karl Maka) made some enemies in the first film, because the second film kicks off with an assassination plot on their lives! The orders come from Henry Kissinger(!), and the assassin is the nefarious Black Glove, who happens to look just like Clint Eastwood AND wears his costume from his famous Spaghetti Westerns, too! Unfazed by their new popularity, King Kong and Kodojak continue to pal around, find romantic misadventures, annoy the returning Inspector "Hot Tongue" Ho (Sylvia Chang), get framed for various crimes, and still regroup in time to rout the bad guys and save the day. Featuring even more slapstick, silliness, and surprising stuntwork, this sequel was an instant success with fans of the first film. It may not make that much sense, but it doesn't have to! It's Aces Go Places 2!

A nefarious international cartel is after a super soldier formula, the secret of which may lie with King Kong (Sam Hui). Meanwhile, Kodojak (Karl Maka) is still experiencing domestic weirdness with wife "Hot Tongue" Ho (Sylvia Chang) and son Baldy Jr. (Cyrus Wong). However, when the bad guys show up, they take Hot Tongue hostage, meaning King Kong, Kodojak, and the surprisingly athletic Baldy Jr. must head to New Zealand to rescue Hot Tongue and take down Toht. There's even time for King Kong to romance Sally (Sally Yeh), and for Baldy Jr. to perform some surprisingly dangerous-looking stuntwork. Featuring the same sublime actor chemistry and supreme energetic silliness of the previous three films, Aces Go Places 4 is surefire comic fun! Directed by Ringo Lam.

Antonioni and Hitchcock meet Taiwanese melodrama in the mystery-thriller Zoom Hunting. Winds of September producer Cho Li makes an ambitious directorial debut with this suspenseful story of two sisters, played by Ning Chang (Black and White, What on Earth Have I Done Wrong?) and Zhu Zhi Yin (Lust, Caution), getting more than they bargain for when they become spectators to a possible murder happening across the street from their home. Cho and co-writer Kelly Yang craft an elaborate puzzle in which reality and illusion blend together seamlessly, keeping the audience constantly guessing along the way until its shocking conclusion. Jack Kao (Shinjuku Incident, James Wen (My Queen), Zhou Hen Yin, and Michelle Krusiec (Saving Face) also co-star in the voyeur mystery. Out of curiosity, fashion photographer Ru Yi (Ning Chang) takes a photo of a couple (James Wen and Zhou Hen Yin) having sex in an apartment across the street from her home. Through further investigation, she finds out that the two are having an extramarital affair. When Ru Yi's novelist sister Ru Xing sees the pictures, she uses them to get over her latest bout with writer's block by incorporating it into her latest novel. However, Ru Yi later suspects that the man may have killed his lover and her sister may even have something to do with it.

We leave in order to return. Writers-directors Yan Yan Mak (Butterfly) and Clement Cheng (Gallants) held this value close to them for Merry-Go-Round, a visually lush urban drama about going home and finding your roots. Commissioned by Hong Kong's premier charity organization to commemorate its 140th anniversary, Merry-Go-Round follows three lost souls in an emotional story that spans generations and continents. After extensive research, Mak and Cheng chose to set their story in a "coffin home" owned by the organization, which houses coffins before family members can have them shipped for burials in their hometowns. Led by Ella Koon (The Shopaholics) taking two roles in a commanding performance, the film's eclectic cast also includes Nora Miao (Way of the Dragon), Teddy Robin (Gallants), Lawrence Chou (Truth or Dare: 6th Floor Rear Flat), and Denise "HOCC" Ho. Cinematographer Jason Kwan (Love in a Puff) brilliantly captures the allure of Hong Kong and the seaside coffin home with gorgeous images that complements the melancholic acoustic score by Hong Kong independent musician Ketchup. Merry-Go-Round was also one of the two closing films at the 2010 Hong Kong Asian Film Festival. Running from her family, terminal illness patient and drug addict Merry (Ella Koon) goes to Hong Kong from San Francisco to look for her internet friend Allen (Lawrence Chou). After being ignored by Allen, Merry wanders her way to the seaside Tung Wah Coffin Home and gets a job working for Uncle Hill (Teddy Robin), the home's caretaker. Meanwhile, Allen's aunt Eva (Nora Miao), a Chinese medicine shop owner, also makes her way from San Francisco to Hong Kong to ensure that Allen doesn't sell the family's medicine shop in Hong Kong. In her hometown, she begins to remember her love affair decades ago with a businessman's son (Lu Yu Lai). Blu-ray Edition comes with directors' commentary and The Story behind Merry-Go-Round.

The Cases's original film title, a Chinese character meaning the "worship of ghosts and gods", perhaps better illustrates what the movie is all about. Hong Kong supernatural specialist Edmond Poon leads actress Wylie Chiu, singer Khloe Chu, and Malaysian model Brandy Akiko to boldly go where no sane man has gone before - some of the most infamous "forbidden places" in Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Bali (Indonesia) - in this Category-III shocker. Supported on their spooky journey by several Southeast Asian exorcists and witchcraft experts, the courageous crew makes close encounters with the supernatural world to get first-hand, never-before-seen documentary footage that offers a rare glimpse into the occult occurrences and inexplicable incidents that have so far defied scientific explanation. Hong Kong Version Blu-ray comes with these special features: making-of, behind the scenes, trailer, deleted scenes, interviews, gala premiere, and photo gallery.
