Intercontinental Video Fire Of Conscience (2010) (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)
RM 108.40
Director Dante Lam follows The Beast Stalker with the powerhouse action thriller Fire of Conscience. Leon Lai and Richie Jen headline the hardboiled crime actioner as opposing cops with dark pasts that build to even darker consequences. Packed with gritty action and stylistic shootouts choreographed by action director Chin Kar Lok, Fire of Conscience paves the way for a brooding, burning showdown between two flawed men with many bullets at their disposal. An impressive supporting cast that includes freshly crowned Hong Kong Film Awards Best Supporting Actress Michelle Ye, Taiwan actress Vivian Hsu, Mainland actor Wang Baoqiang (Equation of Love and Death), and Liu Kai Chi (Beast Stalker) adds compelling character drama to this quintessential Hong Kong crime thriller.

Ill-tempered, unshaven street detective Manfred (Leon Lai) is quick to deal justice with his fists, and constantly on the hunt for the pickpocket who killed his wife. Slick inspector Kee (Richie Jen) is a rising star in the force with more than a few skeletons in his closet. A string of possibly related incidents - a cop killing, a drug raid, and a murdered prostitute - brings the starkly different detectives on the same beat. The two assist each other when their investigations cross paths, but a fatally botched operation soon reveals there's a traitor among them.

Martial arts star Chan Koon Tai meets future action director Yuen Tak in the winning kung-fu picture The Master! Chan Koon Tai is kung-fu master Jin Tien Yun, who escapes from three diabolical killers, called the "Three Devils", with the help of meek kung-fu student Ko Chien (Yuen Tak). Since Ko Chien's master Shi is more of a poser than a fighter, Jin Tien Yun volunteers to help teach Ko in the finer points of real kung-fu fighting - in secret. Ko Chien blossoms as a fighter, but when Shi learns that Ko Chien has supplanted his training with that of another kung-fu master, he's expelled from the school! But the Three Devils arrive after Ko leaves, and take over the kung-fu school. One year later, Ko Chien returns to the school with only one goal: revenge! Director Lu Chin Ku and action director Hsu Hsia bring excellent martial arts sequences and a gripping storyline to The Master, and Yuen Tak and Chan Koon Tai provide the requisite kung-fu presence. Edmond Pang Ho Cheung is one of the new generation of directors emerging in Hong Kong, renowned for his witty and entertaining works which all met with critical acclaim. His Isabella entered the 56th Berlin International Film Festival as the only Chinese-language film. Thanks to Peter Kam's music which enriches the film's nostalgic and exotic mood, Isabella successfully captured the Silver Berlin Bear for the Best Film Music in February, 2006. Stylized camera angles and sentimental music in Isabella remind of Wong Kar Wai's movies, but like other Pang Ho Cheung movies, Isabella also offers an end twist and a subtle connection to larger social or historical issues.

Chapman To (Initial D) and Isabella Leong (Bug Me Not) play father and daughter in the film, and they deliver an ambiguous and sophisticated relationship that is most intriguing. The story is set in Macau on the eve of a new era as the territory prepares for handover back to China. Policeman Shing (Chapman To) also turns a new page in life when he meets the 17-year-old girl Yan (Isabella Leong), who claims to be his daughter.

To Shing, starting anew in the present is a confession of the past. He tries to redeem his sins against Yan's deceased mother (JJ Jia) through Yan, whereas Yan attempts to relive her mother's life vicariously through a new connection with her long-lost father. The dilemma between past and present subtly echoes with other elements in Isabella. While Macau is looking forward to start anew after a century of Portuguese colonization, viewers will find in Isabella a labyrinth-like Macau that resembles a southern Europe town, abundant in her former sovereign Portugal.

The movie guest-stars multiple award-winning actor Anthony Wong Chau Sang and Steven Cheung from Boy'z, and co-stars new Mainland actress JJ Jia and Derek Tsang, famous actor Eric Tsang's son who co-writes Isabella with Pang. Isabella is also a breakthrough for Chapman To as it marks his first leading man role, as well as his first project as a producer, with the new company he co-founded with Pang.

This edition comes with audio commentary, Isabella Leong interview, deleted scenes, making of, and trailer.

Shaw Brothers brings the true history of China to life in The Empress Dowager, a sumptuous epic that dramatizes the rule of the infamous dragon lady of the Ching Dynasty, Empress Dowager Tzu Hsi. Lisa Lu stars as Tzu Hsi, who ruled through four separate puppet emperors, including her nephew Kuang Hsu (Di Lung). A devious and brilliant woman, Tzu Hsi quietly ruled from behind the throne, while Imperial Eunuchs and officials jockeyed for the Emperor's favor. Gorgeous, elaborate sets and costumes bring turn-of-the-century China to life, and director Li Han Hsiang accurately captures the historical pageantry and palace intrigue present during Tzu Hsi's rule. As a gripping drama or a fascinating glimpse of history, The Empress Dowager ranks among Shaw Brothers studios most stunning achievements! Lisa Lu would win a Best Actress Award at the Taiwan Golden Horse Awards, and would even reprise the role of the Empress Dowager in Bernardo Bertolucci's Oscar-winning epic The Last Emperor. Followed by the sequel The Last Tempest.

Intercontinental Video Love In The Buff (2012) (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)
RM 108.40
A story about a love affair between two smokers in Hong Kong's alleyways, 2010's Love in a Puff became one of director Pang Ho Cheung's most popular works due to its enjoyable blend of hilarious foul-mouthed humor and timely commentary on modern relationships. After receiving enthusiastic responses from the film's fans, Pang reunites the team two years later for Love in the Buff, the first sequel in the career of Hong Kong cinema's enfant terrible. Set six months after the end of the first film, Love in the Buff sees Puff lovers Jimmy and Cherie break up in Hong Kong, only to patch things up in Beijing behind the backs of their respective new significant others.

Having relocated to the Chinese capital himself after the production of Puff, Pang once again uses the love story to depict the northward shift of contemporary career-obsessed Hong Kongers, the complications of modern dating, and of course, the beauty of foul-mouthed Cantonese humor. Pang's script (co-written by Luk Yee Sum) pulls off the amazing task of successfully juggling the tastes of both Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese audiences, creating a critically acclaimed box office hit in both regions.

Cosmetics girl Cherie (Miriam Yeung) and ad man Jimmy (Shawn Yue) have been together for six months, and their honeymoon period has ended. After several disagreements, Jimmy decides to move to Beijing to advance his career, causing the two to break up. As fate would have it, Cherie is also assigned to Beijing several months later, and they eventually reunite. Touched by seeing familiar faces in a strange land, Cherie and Jimmy eventually become lovers again. However, Jimmy is now dating gorgeous flight attendant You You (Mini Yang), and Cherie is being courted by Sam (Xu Zheng), a businessman who is clearly more mature and more successful than her ex-boyfriend. As their relationship turns into an affair, the two Hong Kongers now realize that making up is hard to do.

This edition includes a director and cast commentary, deleted scenes, making of, trailers, and other bonus content.

Originally planned as a short film for Japan Airlines, fantasy wartime adventure Porco Rosso eventually became a feature film at the hands of Japanese animation master Miyazaki Hayao. Set in Fascist-ruled Italy in between the two World Wars, Porco Rosso traces a World War I veteran fighter pilot (who happens to look like a pig) and his battles against pirates, the secret police and romantic rivals. Designed as "a manga film for middle-aged men whose brains have been worn out," Porco Rosso has just the right balance of action, comedy and even a dash of romance. The film even broke the box office record Miyazaki had set earlier with Kiki's Delivery Service, becoming the highest grossing theatrical animated film release at the time.

Porco Rosso is a World War I veteran fighter pilot who now flies around the Adriatic Sea as a bounty hunter. When he's not flying on missions, Porco spends his time at the Hotel Adriano, run by good friend Gina. When American pilot Curtis arrives in the area to work for the pirates, he falls in love with Gina, who is obviously in love with Porco. Out of jealousy, Curtis shoots Porco's plane down. Porco manages to drag his damaged plane to Milan for repairs and meets Fio, his mechanic's granddaughter. After Fio proves herself to be a great mechanic and even offers to help Porco escape from the secret police. However, the pilot returns to discover that the pirates are now working for the Fascist government. Curtis also discovers that Porco is still alive and challenges him to a final duel for Gina.

Two years later, the no.1 blockbuster director in China reunites stars Ge You and Shu Qi in the highly anticipated sequel co-written with best-selling novelist Wang Shuo, whose famous works include the novel Jiang Wen's In the Heat of the Sun was adapted from. Reprising their roles as an unlikely couple who are more than friends but not yet lovers, Ge and Shu show greater chemistry in the second act of Feng's profound, humorous, and often touching exploration of romance and marriage which also finds time to ponder on issues of life and death. To give the sequel's starpower a further boost, Feng also brings in Sun Honglei (Forever Enthralled), Yao Chen (Sophie's Revenge), Liao Fan (Assembly), Shao Bing (Let the Bullets Fly), and gorgeous Taiwan drama queen Ady An. The romantic dramedy proved to be a hit with critics and moviegoers alike, grossing over RMB420 million to surpass the original.

After the soul-searching trip to Hokkaido, Xiaoxiao (Shu Qi) has gotten over her bitter affair with Mr. Fang, somewhat disillusioned with romantic relationships. But one man still gives her mixed feelings: Qin Fen (Ge You) is a considerate and funny guy for sure, yet he's too moody and childish to be the man she wants to walk down the aisle with. Although Xiaoxiao has tried to convince herself that Qin is her Mr. Right, she's too conscious of the difference between liking and loving. On the other hand, Qin is pretty sure he wants to end his bachelorhood with Xiaoxiao. In a bid to find out whether they really suit each other, the two rent a villa in the scenic Sanya to begin their "trial marriage"...

Screen favorite Leung Ka Yan delivers a powerful leading performance in Secret Service of the Imperial Court, one of the last of the Shaw Brothers costume swordplay epics! Leung Ka Yan is Chao Bu Fu, a member of an elite guard loyal to the Emperor. However, the government is currently in the possession of power-hungry eunuchs who have the Emperor under their control. Evil eunuch Wang Zhen (Lau Wing) orders Chao Bu Fu to hunt down and kill three loyalists who oppose him, but Bu Fu decides to rebel. Ultimately, Bu Fu's own father (Goo Fung) must hunt down his own son, who confronts whole armies while trying to escape the eunuch's grasp. But despite winning some battles, Bu Fu can't fully escape Wang Zhen's influence, and his loved ones pay the price. With nothing left, Bu Fu vows to kill Wang Zhen, even if it means his own death! Blood-soaked action sequences, brilliant outdoor vistas, and Leung Ka Yan's charismatic performance raise Secret Service of the Imperial Court above its fairly common storyline. Director Lu Chun Ku (The Master) delivers a grand swordplay epic that's a standout of the genre, and a fitting swansong to the spectacular Shaw Brothers costume swordplay tradition!

Isn't it time to discover the madcap, musical world of the Disco Bumpkins? From director Chen Jia Sun (To Love Ferrari) comes this hilariously absurd Shaw Brothers production which features popular singer turned actor George Lam Tze Chung in a starring role. Having since appeared in such Hong Kong films as Six Strong Guys, Owl vs. Bumpo, and All the Wrong Clues, Lam makes for a likeable leading man in this humorous look at love and life!

Released in 1980, this music-packed film exists as a vehicle for Lam, whose character finds himself struggling against all odds to find happiness in both his personal and professional lives. Along with his oddly named pals Snoopy and Hamburger, Lam's character works hard to establish a successful career for himself in the competitive arena of television advertising, but somewhere along the way, he finds himself in the strangest of situations! For example, at one point, he and his friends actually end up getting caught in crazy gang war smack dab in the middle of a junkyard!

Featuring supporting appearances by Mak Tak Law (from Eight Diagram Pole Fighter, The Siamese Twins, and One Way Only, Jing Li (from When The Clouds Roll By and Anonymous Heroes, Liu Li Ling (from Fast Fingers and Brothers from the Walled City, Kent Cheng (from Once Upon a Time in China), and Flora Cheung Tin Oi (from Duel to the Death), this fun-filled musical comedy is sure to entertain! And with an oddball title like Disco Bumpkins, this is one rare Shaw Brothers gem that just begs to be seen!

An action heroine is born in the explosive new blockbuster Chocolate from director Prachya Pinkaew and action director Panna Rittikrai, the tag team behind Ong Bak and Tom Yum Goong. With only her first film, Jija Yanin Vismitananda already stands peerless as Asian Cinema's next big female action star. Discovered five years ago by Prachya Pinkaew during casting sessions for Born to Fight, the 24-year-old actress makes a jaw-dropping debut with a full arsenal of Muay Thai moves that belie her petite frame. Originally trained in taekwondo, Jija Yanin Vismitananda underwent four years of training with Panna Rittikrai, plus personal tutelage from Tony Jaa, in preparation for her debut, and she certainly delivers the action in Chocolate. In an interesting international crossover, popular Japanese actor Abe Hiroshi (The Sword of Alexander) co-stars as Jija Yanin Vismitananda's father.

Tensions are high as Thai gangsters and yakuza bump heads in Bangkok. Yakuza Masashi (Abe Hiroshi) further crosses the Thai underworld when his relationship with Zin (Ammara Siripong), an underling of Thai kingpin No. 8 (Pongpat Wachirabunjong), is revealed. Masashi is soon forced to return to Japan, leaving Zin and their unborn child behind in Thailand. Toughing it out as a single mother, Zin gives birth to an autistic daughter. Clearly a bit different from the rest of the kids, Zen (Jija Yanin Vismitananda) has unnaturally fast reflexes that she channels into learning Muay Thai. Though times are tough, Zen grows up healthy and happy until her mother is diagnosed with cancer. To pay for the medical care, Zen and portly buddy Moom (Taphon Phopwandee) decide to collect Zin's old debts, speaking with fists when payment isn't forthcoming - which is basically every time. Zin's old cronies aren't about to just sit around though while Zen blazes a path of damage through the underworld.

At 3:42am on July 28, 1976, a massive earthquake struck Tangshan, China, devastating the city in merely 23 seconds and resulting in a death toll of more than 240,000. The catastrophe left a gaping wound in the consciousness of the nation, and some 34 years later, China's top director Feng Xiaogang (The Banquet, Assembly) offers catharsis with his latest film Aftershock. Carrying a hefty price tag of RMB200 million, the mega-budget production has raked in an earth-shattering RMB600+ million at the Mainland box office to become the highest grossing local film ever in China, further cementing Feng's status as the No. 1 blockbuster director in Chinese Cinema.

Being the first Chinese film made for the IMAX giant-screen format, the epic production enlisted the services of special effects experts from the US and Korea to depict the terrifying destruction in the stunning opening sequence. But, Aftershock won't settle for being simply a visual spectacle. The film tells a deeply emotional tale centering on a family brutally torn apart by the disaster. Critics have attributed the tremendous power of the film to its touching human drama and the heart-wrenching performances from the cast that includes Xu Fan (Feng's better half), popular actress Zhang Jingchu, Li Chen (Assembly), Lu Yi (Seven Swords), Zhang Guoqiang, and award-winning actor Chen Daoming.

Based on the novel Aftershock by Zhang Ling, the film follows a family who fell victims in the Tangshan Earthquake. The father, Fang Daqiang (Zhang Guoqiang), was crushed dead while trying to rescue his children, Fang Deng and Fang Da, who were trapped in the house. Unable to save both kids, the mother, Li Yuanni (Xu Fan), is forced to sacrifice Fang Deng for her feeble younger brother Fang Da, a decision that proved agonizing for the entire family. It turns out that Fang Deng survived the quake and was adopted by a couple in the aftermath. Thirty-two years later (2008), the grown-up Fang Deng (Zhang Jingchu) would finally cross paths with Fang Da (Li Chen) in Wenchuan, Sichuan...

The Hong Kong Version Blu-ray of Aftershock comes with these bonus features: making-of, cast interviews, trailers, and deleted scenes.

Shaw Brothers auteur Li Han Hsiang helms the period comedy The Mad Monk. Departing from the luscious aesthetics and sensually charged stories he is most well known for, Li offers an earnest and entertaining take on the episodic adventures of Ji Gong, an eccentric vagabond monk who spurned Buddhist rules of asceticism but was considered a "living buddha" because of his benevolence. Portrayed numerous times on both the small and big screen, Ji Gong was perhaps most notably embodied by Stephen Chow in his 1993 film The Mad Monk, although a same-titled offering came much earlier in 1977.

Li's The Mad Monk consists of four stories that see the roaming monk save a mother and daughter from the brink of death and a young man from the hands of unscrupulous debtors. Ji Gong also deals mischievous justice on robbers and corrupt officials. The titular mad monk is played with flair by renowned 70s actor Yeh Feng, who also sings the film's theme song. Co-starring Siu Yam Yam and Yu Rong, The Mad Monk was followed up in 1978 with the sequel The Mad Monk Strikes Again.
