Willa Cather: A Biography
RM 9.60

This book is part of Hyperink's best little books series. This best little book is 3,000+ words of fast, entertaining information on a highly demanded topic. Based on reader feedback (including yours!), we may expand this book in the future. If we do so, we'll send a free copy to all previous buyers. About THE BOOKWilla Cather was a Pulitzer Prize winning American author who is best known for her novels O Pioneers and My Antonia. Her vivid accounts of the experiences of immigrants as they survived the daily struggles of life on the Great Plains of the United States are recognized throughout the world.A prolific writer, Cather's body of work includes twelve novels and several volumes of poetry, all of which won a great deal of acclaim by literary critics and her peers. Some say that her novel A Lost Lady greatly influenced F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Cathers strong personality as well as her great talent makes her personal life story as intriguing as her work. Cather succeeded as a writer in a time when women were rarely seen working outside the home, and few women, if any, were respected for their intellects. Cather drew inspiration for her writing from the people she met throughout her childhood in Nebraska. Her richly drawn characters were inspired by the hard-working immigrants she knew in her early days. Cathers insights into the words of the real people eking out their existence on the plains of Nebraska have inspired American readers for decades. Excerpt From THE BOOKCather was able to support herself with her work as a writer during the years she was in school, between 1893 and 1895. Her works of non-fiction from this period made up three volumes. After graduation, she was given the job of organizing and managing Home Monthly magazine in Pittsburg, Nebraska. While the magazine itself was not outstanding, the fact that Cather was personally responsible for much of its contents certainly is. When she was not working on Home Monthly, she wrote theater r

Turning the Tide - The Top Ten Principles of a Success Mindset
RM 26.80 RM 30.70
Kobo
With her first book, Turning the Tide: The Top Ten Principles of a Success Mindset, Rebekah Harkness has found a fresh approach to the timeless self-help guide: simplicity. Her central message is well-established and harkens back to authors like Norman Vincent Peale and Napoleon Hill: think positively; rid yourself of guilt and regrets about situations from your past; imagine what you want to achieve; don't be afraid that you want too much. This author's particular gift, however, is that she presents these modalities in a clear, calm, twenty-first-century voice today's readers will find irresistibly welcoming - just as they will find her advice on taking charge of their lives eminently "do-able." Harkness also scores in her approach to spirituality. While making it clear that she has faith in God, she avoids entangling readers in organized religion, which she, herself, find inimical to achieving one's dreams and aspirations. Here, at last, is a common-sense, practical treatise sure to be valued by readers in today's unsettled and daunting world.

Language Teacher Education for a Global Society
RM 255.30
The Co-op
The field of second/foreign language teacher education is calling out for a coherent and comprehensive framework for teacher preparation in these times of accelerating economic; cultural; and educational globalization. Responding to this call; this book introduces a state-of-the-art model for developing prospective and practicing teachers into strategic thinkers; exploratory researchers; and transformative teachers. The model includes five modules: Knowing; Analyzing; Recognizing; Doing; and Seeing (KARDS). Its goal is to help teachers understand: how to build a viable professional; personal and procedural knowledge-base;how to analyze learner needs; motivation and autonomy;how to recognize their own identities; beliefs and values; how to do teaching; theorizing and dialogizing; and how to see their own teaching acts from learner; teacher; and observer perspectives.Providing a scaffold for building a holistic understanding of what happens in the language classroom; this model eventually enables teachers to theorize what they practice and practice what they theorize. With its strong scholarly foundation and its supporting reflective tasks and exploratory projects; this book is immensely useful for students; practicing teachers; teacher educators; and educational researchers who are interested in exploring the complexity of language teacher education.

Principles and Practice of Restorative Neurology
RM 269.40 RM 299.30
Kobo
Principles and Practice of Restorative Neurology is a collection of topics in clinical neurology where progress through research has brought concepts of patient management. The collection emphasizes research done clinically and in experimental laboratories and attempts to discuss restorative neurology in the larger context, encompassing biology, neurobiology, and rehabilitative engineering. The book discusses the concept that neurology should be more therapeutic instead of being just diagnostic because of advances in techniques and drugs. An epidemiology of disability and the evaluation of restorative neurology are explained. The text also presents the developments in the pharmacotherapy of major neurological disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, dementia, and stroke. The use of biomechanical or rehabilitation engineering to treat impaired or lost functions in a patient is compared; the feedback mechanisms and the kinds of treatment including microsurgery, nuerostimulation methods, surgery, and molecular genetics that are applied to specific disorders are discussed extensively. The book also reviews the approaches of gene correction for disorders in the central nervous system. Finally, the future needs of neurology in terms of diagnosis and treatments are dealt with as more research, techniques, and drugs are being discovered and proved useful. The collection is intended for neurologists, neurologists in training, and other physicians whose work lies with neurological disorders. The book can also prove useful for practitioners and academicians in the fields of neurosurgery, internal medicine, psychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine.

George Stubbs: 50 Chapters of an Imagined Biography
RM 21.10 RM 23.50
Kobo
This biography of George Stubbs, leading eighteenth century English animal painter, is "imagined", because virtually nothing is known of his character or private life. Historian Merritt Abrash has combined his knowledge of eighteenth century Great Britain with the facts of Stubbs' artistic career and the evidence of his paintings, in order to create stories providing insights into the kind of man the artist might have been. The fifty stories consist of episodes, imaginary but not impossible, which present Stubbs at different moments of life, from the confidence, strivings and adventures of youth to the doubts, fears and deeper understandings of old age. His interactions with fellow artists-Gainsborough, Reynolds, Turner, Blake and others less famous-are often contentious, and encounters with prominent contemporaries such as Dr. Johnson, Gibbon, Wesley and Smith take surprising turns. Stories dealing with his independent-minded common-law wife, their son and personal friends reveal Stubbs experiencing both joy and grief.' His character emerges as centered on the conviction that truth is to be found in the rationally observed factuality of life, yet occurrences in some episodes prove to be beyond factual explanation, leading him instead to unexpected spiritual insights.

Mark Twain, a Biography - Volume II, Part 2: 1886-1900
RM 13.20
Kobo
The Browning readings must have begun about this time. Just what kindled Mark Twain's interest in the poetry of Robert Browning is not remembered, but very likely his earlier associations with the poet had something to do with it. Whatever the beginning, we find him, during the winter of 1886 and 1887, studiously, even violently, interested in Browning's verses, entertaining a sort of club or class who gathered to hear his rich, sympathetic, and luminous reading of the Payleyings- "With Bernard de Mandeville, " "Daniel Bartoli, " or "Christopher Smart. " Members of the Saturday Morning Club were among his listeners and others-friends of the family. They were rather remarkable gatherings, and no one of that group but always vividly remembered the marvelously clear insight which Mark Twain's vocal personality gave to those somewhat obscure measures. They did not all of them realize that before reading a poem he studied it line by line, even word by word; dug out its last syllable of meaning, so far as lay within human possibility, and indicated with pencil every shade of emphasis which would help to reveal the poet's purpose

The Sexy Angelina Jolie Biography and Career

Angelina Jolie is an Oscar-winning actress who has become popular by taking on the title role in the "Lara Croft" series of blockbuster movies. Off-screen, Jolie has become prominently involved in international charity projects, especially those involving refugees. Angelina got a major break in 1999 when she won a leading role in the successful feature The Bone Collector (1999), starring alongside Denzel Washington. In that same year, Jolie gave a tour de force performance in Girl, Interrupted (1999) playing opposite Winona Ryder. The movie was a true story of women who spent time in a psychiatric hospital. Jolie's role was reminiscent of Jack Nicholson's character in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), the role which won Nicholson his first Oscar. In 2004, Jolie began filming Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) with co-star Brad Pitt. The film became a major box office success. There were rumors that Pitt and Jolie had an affair while filming "Smith". Jolie and Pitt announced in early 2006 that they would have a child together, and Jolie gave birth to daughter Shiloh that May.

Hedge Funds. Principles, Chances and Risks

Essay from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,0, Berlin School of Economics and Law, course: National and International Finance Relationship, language: English, abstract: The name hedge funds can be confusing because it is not the case that these funds hedge with its strategies only against losses. Moreover they absorb risks and focus on misvalues of shares or markets they have identified. In this way hedge funds try to achieve high yields by using appropriate strategies in the right time. Therefore hedging can only be a part of the strategy as it secures the portfolio against risks which the hedge fund has not included. The final success of the investment of hedge funds ultimately depends on the correction of assumed misvalues. Alfred Winslow Jones was the founder of the first hedge fund in 1949 and obtained the idea to eliminate the unpredictable market trend. Therefore he launched an investment company named 'Jones Hedge Fund' which was the first hedge fund worldwide. But his invention was not in demand until 1962 when the stock market collapsed. While all shares and funds lost their value, the 'Jones Hedge Fund' reached an absolute return due to the falling prices of shares. The reason for this phenomenon will be explained in the fourth chapter. Since then hedge funds became quite popular even though the real break trough started during the technolgy boom in the 1980's. The total capital asset under management of hedge funds was in the beginning less than 200 million US Dollar which has been extensively growing up to 25% in average in the last 16 years. Although they have been growing a little weaker with approximately 19 % for the last six years, their asset under management is risen of approximately 1.5 billion US Dollar. So far there is no predicted end in sight. But surprisingly they represent a relative small size compared to the asset management industry. Furthermore due to the remarkable growth of hedge fund

The Principles Of Leadership
RM 19.30
Kobo
In this book, author Dr. Yusuf bin 'Uthman al-Huzaim offers an insightful awareness of the many theories and practices of leadership deriving from Islamic heritage and the modern American experience. This study is not so much a comparative one as it is a complementary one, in an attempt to fuse together the contributions and developments that have emerged from both domains as a way of forging new grounds within this specialization we know as leadership. Like most literature on leadership, this work is full of conceptual frameworks and models, real-life examples and figures, practical advice, and recommendations. However, Dr. al-Huzaim does something more in his study of leadership: he combines Western management theory and practices with Islamic principles. From an Islamic standpoint, Dr. al-Huzaim does not rely on Western philosophy to establish principles of leadership, but he draws on them to demonstrate the vast wealth of literature on the subject (a point he emphasizes to the Arab world for its lack of specialized works in this field), while only tending to draw on those that are in agreement with the truth.

Robert Plant is one of the few genuine living rock legends. Frontman of Led Zeppelin, musical innovator and seller of millions of records, Plant has had a profound influence on music for over four decades. But the full account of his life has barely been told … until now. Robert Plant: A Life is the first complete and comprehensive telling of Plant's story. From his earliest performances in folk clubs in the early 1960s, to the world's biggest stages as Led Zeppelin's self-styled 'Golden God', and on to his emergence as an emboldened solo star. The sheer scale of Zeppelin's success is extraordinary: in the US alone they sold 70 million records, a figure surpassed only by the Beatles. But their success was marred by tragedy. These pages contain first-hand accounts of Plant's greatest highs and deepest lows: the tragic deaths of his son Karac and his friend, Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. Told in vivid detail, this is the definitive story of a man of great talent, remarkable fortitude and extraordinary conviction.

Kant: A Biography

This is the first full-length biography in more than fifty years of Immanuel Kant, one of the giants amongst the pantheon of Western philosophers as well as the one with the most powerful and broad influence on contemporary philosophy. It is well known that Kant spent his entire life in an isolated part of Prussia living the life of a typical university professor. This has given rise to the view that Kant was a pure thinker with no life of his own, or at least none worth considering seriously. In this biography, Manfred Kuehn debunks that myth once and for all. Taking account of the most recent scholarship Professor Kuehn allows the reader (whether interested in philosophy, history, politics, German culture, or religion) to follow the same journey that Kant himself took in emerging as a central figure in modern philosophy.

Principles of Microelectromechanical Systems
RM 678.50
Kobo
The building blocks of Mems design through closed-form solutions Microelectromechanical Systems, or Mems, is the technology of very small systems; it is found in everything from inkjet printers and cars to cell phones, digital cameras, and medical equipment. This book describes the principles of Mems via a unified approach and closed-form solutions to micromechanical problems, which have been recently developed by the author and go beyond what is available in other texts. The closed-form solutions allow the reader to easily understand the linear and nonlinear behaviors of Mems and their design applications. Beginning with an overview of Mems, the opening chapter also presents dimensional analysis that provides basic dimensionless parameters existing in large- and small-scale worlds. The book then explains microfabrication, which presents knowledge on the common fabrication process to design realistic Mems. From there, coverage includes: Statics/force and moment acting on mechanical structures in static equilibrium Static behaviors of structures consisting of mechanical elements Dynamic responses of the mechanical structures by the solving of linear as well as nonlinear governing equations Fluid flow in Mems and the evaluation of damping force acting on the moving structures Basic equations of electromagnetics that govern the electrical behavior of Mems Combining the Mems building blocks to form actuators and sensors for a specific purpose All chapters from first to last use a unified approach in which equations in previous chapters are used in the derivations of closed-form solutions in later chapters. This helps readers to easily understand the problems to be solved and the derived solutions. In addition, theoretical models for the elements and systems in the later chapters are provided, and solutions for the static and dynamic responses are obtained in closed-forms. This book is designed for senior or graduate students in electrical and mechanical en

Chester B. Himes: A Biography
RM 147.80 RM 184.60
Kobo
The definitive biography of the groundbreaking African American author who had an extraordinary legacy on black writers globally. Chester B. Himes has been called "one of the towering figures of the black literary tradition" (Henry Louis Gates Jr.), "the best writer of mayhem yarns since Raymond Chandler" (San Francisco Chronicle), and "a quirky American genius" (Walter Mosely). He was the twentieth century's most prolific black writer, captured the spirit of his times expertly, and left a distinctive mark on American literature. Yet today he stands largely forgotten. In this definitive biography of Chester B. Himes (1909-1984), Lawrence P. Jackson uses exclusive interviews and unrestricted access to Himes's full archives to portray a controversial American writer whose novels unflinchingly confront sex, racism, and black identity. Himes brutally rendered racial politics in the best-selling novel If He Hollers Let Him Go, but he became famous for his Harlem detective series, including Cotton Comes to Harlem. A serious literary tastemaker in his day, Himes had friendships-sometimes uneasy-with such luminaries as Ralph Ellison, Carl Van Vechten, and Richard Wright. Jackson's scholarship and astute commentary illuminates Himes's improbable life-his middle-class origins, his eight years in prison, his painful odyssey as a black World War II-era artist, and his escape to Europe for success. More than ten years in the writing, Jackson's biography restores the legacy of a fascinating maverick caught between his aspirations for commercial success and his disturbing, vivid portraits of the United States.

Principles of Evolutionary Medicine
RM 257.20 RM 285.40
Kobo
Evolutionary science is critical to an understanding of integrated human biology and is increasingly recognised as a core discipline by medical and public health professionals. Advances in the field of genomics, epigenetics, developmental biology, and epidemiology have led to the growing realisation that incorporating evolutionary thinking is essential for medicine to achieve its full potential. This revised and updated second edition of the first comprehensive textbook of evolutionary medicine explains the principles of evolutionary biology from a medical perspective and focuses on how medicine and public health might utilise evolutionary thinking. It is written to be accessible to a broad range of readers, whether or not they have had formal exposure to evolutionary science. The general structure of the second edition remains unchanged, with the initial six chapters providing a summary of the evolutionary theory relevant to understanding human health and disease, using examples specifically relevant to medicine. The second part of the book describes the application of evolutionary principles to understanding particular aspects of human medicine: in addition to updated chapters on reproduction, metabolism, and behaviour, there is an expanded chapter on our coexistence with micro-organisms and an entirely new chapter on cancer. The two parts are bridged by a chapter that details pathways by which evolutionary processes affect disease risk and symptoms, and how hypotheses in evolutionary medicine can be tested. The final two chapters of the volume are considerably expanded; they illustrate the application of evolutionary biology to medicine and public health, and consider the ethical and societal issues of an evolutionary perspective. A number of new clinical examples and historical illustrations are included. This second edition of a novel and popular textbook provides an updated resource for doctors and other health professionals, medical students and biomedical sc

Principles and Values in Criminal Law and Criminal Justice: Essays in Honour of Andrew Ashworth
RM 475.30 RM 527.80
Kobo
Celebrating the scholarship of Andrew Ashworth, Vinerian Professor of English Law at the University of Oxford, this collection brings together leading international scholars to explore questions of principle and value in criminal law and criminal justice. Internationally renowned for elaborating a body of principles and values that should underpin criminalization, the criminal process, and sentencing, Ashworth's contribution to the field over forty years of scholarship has been immense. Advancing his project of exploring normative issues at the heart of criminal law and criminal justice, the contributors examine the important and fascinating debates in which Ashworth's influence has been greatest. The essays fall into three distinct but related areas, reflecting Ashworth's primary spheres of influence. Those in Part 1 address the import and role of principles in the development of a just criminal law, with contributions focusing upon core tenets such as the presumption of innocence, fairness, accountability, the principles of criminal liability, and the grounds for defences. Part 2 addresses questions of human rights and due process protections in both domestic and international law. In Part 3 the essays are addressed to core issues in sentencing and punishment: they explore questions of equality, proportionality, adherence to the rule of law, the totality principle (in respect of multiple offences), wrongful acquittals, and unduly lenient sentences. Together they demonstrate how important Ashworth's work has been in shaping how we think about criminal law and criminal justice, and make their own invaluable contribution to contemporary discussions of criminalization and punishment.

The Principles of Gothic Ecclesiastical Architecture

Amongst the vestiges of antiquity which abound in this country, are the visible memorials of those nations which have succeeded one another in the occupancy of this island. To the age of our Celtic ancestors, the earliest possessors of its soil, is ascribed the erection of those altars and temples of all but primeval antiquity, the Cromlechs and Stone Circles which lie scattered over the land; and these are conceived to have been derived from the Phanicians, whose merchants first introduced amongst the aboriginal Britons the arts of incipient civilization. Of these most ancient relics the prototypes appear, as described in Holy Writ, in the pillar raised at Bethel by Jacob, in the altars erected by the Patriarchs, and in the circles of stone set up by Moses at the foot of Mount Sinai, and by Joshua at Gilgal. Many of these structures, perhaps from their very rudeness, have survived the vicissitudes of time, whilst there scarce remains a vestige of the temples erected in this island by the Romans; yet it is from Roman edifices that we derive, and can trace by a gradual transition, the progress of that peculiar kind of architecture called Gothic, which presents in its later stages the most striking contrast that can be imagined to its original precursor.
