In January 1990, two electrical engineers Gary Burrell and Dr. Min Kao formed Garmin Corporation in Taiwan. The firm's name was derived from the first names of the founders. The firm introduced its first product, the GPS 100AVD, in January 1991 targeting boaters and pilots of small planes. The device was sold for about $1,000.
Subsequently, another GPS unit for pilots called the GPS 95 was introduced and sold for $1,795.
