Taking good care of your skin is necessary but a lot of people are less enthusiastic when they know it does not just require soap and water. Every day our skin is exposed to health threats that will sneak past our skin’s defenses and make us ill, especially if you don’t take good care of your skin on a daily basis. Not only does it act as an immune organ, it also helps to regulate the overall temperature of your body, keeping you cool or warm depending on the weather. Below are some simple tips that can help improve your skin complexion.
Incorporate a daily skin care routine into your lifestyle
There is so much information out there in terms of the proper methods of maintaining our skin that it might get a little overwhelming. However, most skin care philosophies and theories suggest that we only need five basic steps to achieve good skin which are cleanse, tone, moisturize, exfoliate, and apply sunscreen.
Our skin naturally collects sweat, oil, dirt, and other pollutants during the day and night, and cleansing is a great way to remove all the gunk. It is always ideal to cleanse your skin in the morning because sebum and dead skin cells can build-up overnight and it is needed to dislodge them and rinse them away. Water alone will not do the trick. Thus, you should utilise a cleaner that is suitable for your skin type. It is preferable to apply the cleaner with an upward, circular motion to prevent wrinkles from forming. Before doing so, always wash your hands first so that bacteria would not be transferred to your face. Once you have thoroughly cleansed your face, finish off by rinsing your skin with cold water to close up the pores, leaving your skin feeling refreshed.
Many people deem that using a toner after cleansing their skin is an unnecessary step, but it is much more beneficial than they think. What a toner does is it restores your skin to its natural pH level which was altered during cleansing. Applying toner after cleansing your skin removes any impurities or residue left behind by the cleanser as well as any makeup or oils that your cleanser might have missed. It also prepares your skin to absorb moisturizer and minimize the appearance of pores. A small amount of toner is only needed to achieve that and it is best applies when your face is still damp. You may utilise a cotton pad by simply soaking the pads with toner and wiping it on your entire face avoiding sensitive areas such as your eyes.
This is a step that should not be avoided as it provides a protective layer to your skin that helps to locks in moisture to keep your skin feeling hydrated throughout the day. Plus, it gives your skin an even, glowing appearance. Gently rub the moisturizer onto your skin through small circular motions not only on your face but your neck as well. Before applying other products on your face, give it time to sink in to receive its full benefits. Ensure that the moisturizer utilised is suitable for your skin type such as lighter moisturizers are suitable for people with oily skin while heavier moisturizers are suitable for people with drier skin.
This step is not needed to be done every day but it could be a good practice to exfoliate every once a week. Even though we shed skin cells every day, those cells can build up on our skin as well and might need an extra help to remove it. People who are more prone to breakouts or blackheads should definitely not miss this step. It I recommended to gently massage the exfoliator in circular motions and make sure not to scrub too hard as it can be pretty harsh on the skin.
UV rays are damaging to your skin and with prolonged exposure, it is bad for all skin types. That is why it is crucial to utilize a foundation that contains SPF. Make sure that it is applied everyday which is the key for protecting your skin and maintaining it as youthful as possible.
Apply a minimum of SPF 15 to your face for the day, and if you are anticipating higher UV exposure it is best to use a higher SPF.
Eat a well-balanced diet
Always incorporate lots of fruits and vegetable into your diet as it is key to maintaining an overall good health as well as good skin. Other than fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and other healthy fats should be included as well. Nutrients that are beneficial for your skin are such as:
Antioxidants help prevent or stop cell damage caused by oxidants; it also improves circulation and protects skin from premature aging. Foods that are high in antioxidants include berries, dark chocolate, cilantro, pecan nuts, etc.
These are the natural pigment that is found in brightly coloured fruits and vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, dark leafy greens, tomatoes and many more.
The most important vitamins for healthy skin is C, D, and E. Vitamin C is responsible for collagen production that will help your skin to heal as well as reduce wrinkles. On the other hand, Vitamin D is vital for skin cell growth. As for Vitamin E, it helps in the process of slowing down the aging of skin cells, making your look more youthful.
Also known as healthy fats, it has anti-inflammatory properties and keeps skin moisturized. It also works well with other nutrients as it better helps the body in terms of absorption.
Caffeine which is mostly found in coffee helps lower the risk of skin cancer.
