Doraemon Malaysia: Japan’s Iconic Robotic Cat

Doraemon Malaysia: Our Childhood Hero

Doraemon is the name of a Japanese manga series that has earned a special place in the hearts of many adults and children. The series was first published in 1969 by a writing team named Fujiko Fujio. The plot revolves around a robotic cat named Doraemon, who travels back in time to aid a boy named Nobita Nobi. The story covers the many adventures (both good and bad) that Doraemon and Nobita have along with a few of Nobita’s friends.

The manga became so popular that it was turned into a (very) successful anime series and media franchise. Not only that, Doraemon is so much more than just a cartoon character as its popularity has caused it to be adapted into products that range from toys to household items.

Doraemon Malaysia: For The Young At Heart

While there is no way to actually own a robot cat like Doraemon or even have any of his cool gadgets at your disposal, there are other products (figurines and all) that could satisfy your need to have anything Doraemon-like. Majority of Doraemon’s products can be found in blue and white as it is the iconic colour of the robot cat. Keep track of the time with Doraemon Clocks that feature Doraemon with his sister, Dorami (a yellow robot cat with red ribbon-like ears) and/or Nobita and friends. If you are out of gifting ideas for your child (or even your childhood friend!), then have a look at our array of Doraemon Kids & Toys for a cute Memory Bread plush toy or Doraemon figurine that anyone (who is young at heart and also a big Doraemon fan) would love!

Doraemon Malaysia: Robot Cat From The Future

While the original manga series may have ended in 1996, Doraemon is not any less popular than it was back then. One of the oldest icons in Japan, it is no wonder Doraemon has received many awards and recognition from not only its home country, but also from various people around the globe. The blue cat was appointed as Japan’s first anime cultural ambassador in 2008 and has been seen on buses and trains all over Japan.

The main characters of Doraemon (Doraemon, Nobita, Shizuka, Gian, and Suneo) even became the main stars of the Fujiko F Fujio Museum, that opened in Kawasaki in year 2011. The museum pays homage to the playful, heartwarming ideas of one of the creators and writers of the world’s famous blue cat, the late Hiroshi Fujimoto.

Doraemon Malaysia: Interesting Facts That You May Not Have Known

  1. The word ‘Dora’ in Doraemon’s name is a play on words. It can be roughly translated to mean ‘stray’. It could also be a reference to Doraemon’s favorite food, dorayaki (Japanese pancakes that usually come with a red bean filling).
  2. Doraemon was sent back in time by Nobita’s great-great-grandson to help Nobita so that his descendants could have a better future.
  3. Doraemon’s original colour was supposed to be yellow, like his sister, Dorami. Unfortunately an incident occurred that turned him blue and caused him to have a phobia of rats. Read on to find out.
  4. Doraemon originally had ears but lost them to robot rats who ate his ears. More details can be found in the movie ‘2112: The Birth of Doraemon’.
  5. While some of Doraemon’s awesome gadgets (like the Anywhere Door and Memory Bread) may not be seen in the years to come, there are others that may already be in our reach. The “Doraemon’s Scientific Future” Exhibition in 2010 featured several gadgets that have been actualized by developments. Among them is Doraemon’s Mecha Maker that closely resembles today’s 3D-printing machine.
  6. To commemorate the 80th birthday of the creators of Doraemon, a mini guitar featuring the blue robot cat was sold in the year 2014. The mini guitar was built from mahogany wood and comes with an in-built amplifier and speaker so that it can be played anytime, anywhere.
  7. On the special issue of Asian Hero in Time magazine in year 2002, Doraemon was the only anime character selected and was described as the “Cuddliest Hero in Asia”.
