Wes Anderson's THE Life Aquatic, a group of oceanic explorers who call themselves Team Zissou embark on a journey to hunt down the 'jaguar shark' that ate one of their crew members (Seymour Cassel). Determined to avenge the death of his dear friend, team leader Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) is melancholic about the journey he's about to make. Meanwhile, financial troubles and nostalgia for his past make Zissou behave like a reckless playboy, an ageing softy, and a past-his-prime tyrant. Surrounding Zissou are a hodgepodge of eccentrics--a pregnant journalist doing a magazine feature (Cate Blanchett), an airline pilot from Kentucky who claims he is Zissou's son (Owen Wilson), an emotionally needy European (Willem Dafoe), an acoustic guitarist who sings David Bowie songs in Brazilian Portuguese (Seu Jorge), Zissou's brilliant wife (Anjelica Houston), and her ex-husband who is Zissou's seafaring nemesis (Jeff Goldblum). Clad in baby-blue polyester uniforms, Adidas sneakers, and red stocking caps, Team Zissou is a sight to see. And as their deep-sea adventure takes them into dangerous waters where they are attacked by pirates and dazzled by CGI fish, the group finds magic both in their bonds to each other and in the colourful world around them. In keeping with Anderson's unique brand of escapist humour, these caricatured characters are nothing short of fascinating. While their lives are extraordinary, they act bored, dwelling on banalities like hurt feelings, jealousy, and loneliness. The more absurd their stories are, the more believable their quirky personalities become. With plenty of hilarious moments offsetting the film's tongue-in-cheek sentimentalism, THE Life Aquatic is sure to please seasoned Anderson fans and make new ones of the uninitiated. Read more
Please note this is a region 2 DVD and will require a region 2 or region free DVD player in order to play. In THE Pacifier Vin Diesel is great as a navy seal turned babysitter in this kid-friendly action comedy. A botched rescue mission (brimming with stunts) results in the death of a scientist and the hospitalization of seal team-leader Shane Wolf. Once he recovers, he is assigned to duty as a bodyguard for the dead man's family. But even for a seal--toughened to the point of stoniness--dealing with the chaos, smells, noises, and complexities of a large, fatherless family proves to be a heavy challenge. The kids don't like his authoritative ways and they have no problem defying him at every turn. Eventually everybody bonds and while the family teaches him to listen and relax, he teaches them the combat skills they need to succeed in suburban Los Angeles. It's all very funny but the film really works best as a showcase for the range of Diesel; he takes his pratfalls in stride, his character's devotion to military discipline and honour is inspiring; and his bonding with the family is sweet without being saccharine. What's more, he still gets the chance to kick some serious bad-guy butt. Lauren Graham (Bad Santa) plays the kindly grade school principal and love interest. Everybody Loves RAYMOND's Brad Garrett is hilarious as a sadistic wrestling coach. There's also a crotch-biting pet duck, ninjas, sewer-diving, a troop of kung fu-fighting girl scouts, and the hilarious 'panda dance'. Read more

While the majority of Studio Ghibli's films are directed by Miyazaki Hayao and Takahata Isao, there have been exceptions over the years, including the 2002 feature The Cat Returns. Directed by Morita Hiroyuki who was previously a key animator on My Neighbors the Yamadas, The Cat Returns is a follow-up to late director Kondo Yoshifume's 1995 Ghibli feature Whisper of the Heart. In Whisper of the Heart, the young protagonist and aspiring writer toiled over a fantasy story about a schoolgirl and a dapper feline named Baron. Seven years later, her story turned into the brightly animated and wistfully told coming-of-age fantasy The Cat Returns. Though The Cat Returns is not at the same level as Miyazaki and Takahata's works, even a minor Studio Ghibli release is heads and shoulders above the competition. Shy high school student Haru has long had the uncanny ability to communicate with cats. One day, she rescues a strange cat from oncoming traffic. But the cat turns out to be no ordinary feline. He is actually Prince of the Cat Kingdom and to repay Haru's kindness, he offers to take her hand in marriage! To clear up the mix-up, Haru travels to the Cat Kingdom with the help of Baron. But once she steps into the land of the cats, she discovers that she herself is gradually turning into a cat! This version also features the bonus short film Ghiblies Episode 2. Blu-ray Edition includes storyboards, dubbing script, making of and trailers.

From the studio that brought us Kiki's Delivery Service and Spirited Away comes the classic anime, Grave of the Fireflies. Set in post-war Japan, only a few weeks before the American occupation, director Isao Takahata's powerful anti-war masterpiece centers on the lives of two brave siblings, a fourteen year old boy named Seita and his four year old sister, Setsuko. With their father away serving in the imperial navy and their mother tragically killed in an air raid, the two children are forced to stay with their aunt, a cruel woman who proves to be a poor caregiver for the two children. After quarreling with their aunt, the two siblings leave the city and venture out on their own, eventually taking up residence in a cave-turned-abandoned bomb shelter. With no adults to turn to, the youngsters must depend solely on each other to survive. But it isn't long before their resources are exhausted, and Seita is forced into stealing so he can feed the starving Setsuko. And sadly, it seems his little sister is getting weaker by the moment. These dark times are illuminated only by the light of the fireflies. Based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Akiyuki Nosaka, this Studio Ghibli-produced film has been universally hailed as a classic since its 1988 release. The emotionally charged motion picture highlights the suffering endured by the innocent victims of war, a stunning portrayal that has resonated with audiences worldwide. Ultimately, Grave of the Fireflies is an unforgettable film, sure to bring even the most jaded audience to tears with its poignant tale of the horrors of war, and the children left behind in its wake. Blu-ray Edition includes storyboards, dubbing script, interview with director Takahata Isao, interview with film critic Roger Ebert, audio interviews, audio documentary, stills gallery, and trailers.

Based on a Hiiragi Aoi teen girl comic discovered by Miyazaki Hayao during his summer vacation, Whisper of the Heart was the first Studio Ghibli theatrical feature film that isn't directed by studio co-founders Miyazaki or Takahata Isao. In a move to train a new generation of younger directors, Miyazaki's script was instead handed over to Kondo Yoshifumi, who unfortunately passed away in 1997 with Whisper as his only directorial effort. A low-key drama with a sweet youth romance at its core, Whisper of the Heart transcended a typical children's animated film with relatively more mature themes such as career ambitions and teenage life, making it appealing to viewers of all ages. The fantasy sequences in the film, based on the protagonist's novel and starring a cat named The Baron, even became so popular with audiences that Studio Ghibli later brought back the character with The Cat Returns. One day, junior high school student Shizuku left a book that includes her composition for a graduation song in school. When she returns to retrieve the book, she finds that a boy has picked it up and read it. He automatically becomes her enemy when he makes fun of the lyrics as "corny". Later, Shizuku discovers that the boy is Amasawa Seiji, the mysterious person whom Shizuku noticed had checked out every single book in the library. The two later become friends and come to develop feelings for each other. However, when Seiji decides to go abroad to study for a career as a luthier, Shizuku begins to grow worried about her own future. As a result, Shizuku begins working on a book based on a cat at the local antique shop as the first step in beginning her own career. Blu-ray Edition includes multiple audio language tracks and multiple sets of subtitles. It also features storyboards (shown as a picture-in-picture feature during the film), the dubbing script, the making of the background paintings in Baron sequences, and a documentary on the working process of animator Inoue Naohisa.

Renowned animation house Studio Ghibli and director Miyazaki Hayao offer a different kind of coming-of-age tale with Kiki's Delivery Service. Based on the children's book by Kadono Eiko, Miyazaki's much-beloved youth romance follows the journey of a 13-year-old witch-in-training who goes to the big city and becomes an entrepreneur by starting her own delivery service. While the story is pure fantasy, Kiki's Delivery Service is an enchanting, but down-to-earth tale about finding confidence in yourself and the magic of young love. After winning multiple awards in Japan, Kiki's also set a new record for the highest-grossing animated theatrical release in Japanese cinema history - until Miyazaki beat his own record three years later with Porco Rosso. When a witch reaches 13 years old, she must go off and live alone for a year. For her training, Kiki takes off to the port city Koriko with her best friend, a black cat named Jiji. After a difficult start, Kiki manages to make friends and even start a delivery service that takes advantage of her flying abilities. She is also pursued by Tombo, a teenager who is an aviation enthusiast and intrigued by Kiki's powers. One day, in the biggest crisis of her young life, Kiki suddenly loses her flying powers and the ability to talk to Jiji. Will Kiki be able to get her powers back? Deceptively simple, beautiful, moving, and hilarious, Dumbo is often overlooked when considering Disney's greatest films because perhaps of its lack of extravagance, its brief running time, and its simple story. Baby elephant Jumbo Jr. is delivered by the stork to his elephant mother with much fanfare but soon receives a cold shoulder from the snobby female pachyderms and the rest of the circus due to his oversize ears. When his mother goes on a rampage in order to protect him from some snickering rubes, she winds up locked away. Dumbo is left without a friend in the world until the street-smart Timothy Mouse decides to become his manager and a telephone line full of delightful jive-talking crows convince him he can fly. Highlights include Dumbo accidentally getting drunk and experiencing the surreal musical sequence Pink Elephants on Parade and a soundtrack packed with such priceless songs as the Oscar-winning 'Baby Mine' and the crow's soulful number, 'When I see an Elephant Fly'. There's nary an imperfect moment to be found in this raucous, tender, sublime film, which has been delighting audiences for generations. After his ambitious directorial debut, Miyazaki Goro goes back to basic with Studio Ghibli's From Up On Poppy Hill, his first collaboration with his father Miyazaki Hayao, who co-wrote the script. More similar to Whisper of the Heart than Tales of Earthsea, Poppy Hill is a simple schoolyard romance based on a manga by Sayama Tetsuro. Popular young actress Nagasawa Masami (I Wish) provides the voice for the film's heroine Umi, while V6's Okada Junichi plays her romantic interest Shun. In addition to being a sweet love story, Poppy Hill is also about preserving memories in the face of modernity. Despite the production being disrupted by the March 11 disasters, the Miyazakis kept their promise and released the film on time in cinemas, providing much-needed lighthearted entertainment for Japanese audiences. Poppy Hill eventually became the highest-grossing Japanese film of 2011, and it won the Animation of the Year award at the 35th Japan Academy Prize. 1960s, Yokohama. 17-year-old Umi (Nagasawa Masami) lives in a house on a hilltop next to the sea with her grandmother and other boarders. Everyday, she raises a signal flag for passing ships, and schoolmate Shun (Okada Junichi) notices the flag every morning from his father's tugboat. The two eventually meet in school at a protest rally to protect the old Quarter Latin building, which houses all the interest clubs. Umi ends up joining the cause, getting other female students to help Shun and the other students clean up the building. In the process, Umi and Shun develop feelings for each other. However, Umi discovers a shocking secret from the past that threatens to drive them apart. This edition includes storyboards, the film's dubbing script, music video, stage events, and trailers.
