What you need to know about perfumes

There are countless scents available in the market that it may be overwhelming when it comes to shopping for a new perfume. Many factors are involved when you pick a scent, such as the type of concentration of the perfume, the type of fragrances and much more. For example, the concentration of the perfume can be split into a few categories which include parfum, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, eau de cologne, and eaufraiche. Here are a few essentials you need to know about perfumes.

Types of perfume strength

The concentration of the perfume can be typically found underneath the name of the perfume on a bottle which denotes the strength of its fragrance. For the perfumes with a higher fragrance concentration, it usually contains a higher percentage of perfume oils and smaller percentage of alcohol.

Parfum

This category of perfume is also known as Extrait de parfum or pure perfume. It has the highest concentration of fragrance where it can contain anywhere from between 15 to 40 percent of fragrance, but for most parfums the concentration is typically between 20 to 30 percent. If you prefer a longer lasting scent without having to re-apply after a few hours, parfum is your best bet. This is because; parfums last the longest among all the other types of perfumes. It usually can last between 6 to 8 hours and because of this, it can command the highest price among all the other fragrances. Parfum is best used for those who suffer from sensitive skin as the alcohol content is far lesser than other fragrances and would not dry out the skin.

Eau de Parfum

Having the second highest concentration of fragrance, Eau de parfum (EDP) is a cheaper alternative for parfums where it contains anywhere between 15 and 20 percent of fragrance concentration. Normally, eau de parfum can last roughly 4 to 5 hours and is suitable to be worn daily. While it has a higher concentration of alcohol compared to parfums, it still can be used on sensitive skin.

Eau de Toilette

The term Eau de Toilette is derived from the French term ā€œfairesa toiletteā€, which stands for getting ready. Eau de Toilette is one of the most popular and commonly bought perfumes available. It has a concentration of roughly between 5 to 15 percent. The reason it is so popular is because the price is usually mid-range and available in most stores. EDT can last from 2 to 3 hours and is considered a daytime type of perfume.

Eau de Cologne

Compared to the other types of fragrances as mentioned above, Eau de Cologne or EDC, has a much lower concentration of fragrance that only makes up 2 to 4 percent combined with a high concentration of alcohol. Although it is cheaper than the other types of fragrances, it can only last a maximum of 2 hours. Generally, EDC is sold in bigger bottles as you need to spray more of it in order for the smell to be obvious. Back in the days, only a traditional recipe that used herbs and citrus notes with slight base notes were used to make eau de cologne.

Eau Fraiche

Eau fraiche has the lightest scent among all the other types of fragrances and will generally last up to two hours as it is very diluted. The percentage of the fragrance concentrations is usually between 1 to 3 percent only. Even though it has a low fragrance concentration, it does not contain a high amount of alcohol. This is because; it is mainly made up of water.
