Master the Essentials of Choosing Your Motherboard

Aptly named, "Motherboard" is one of the most important parts of your computer. It is responsible for connecting and communicating between all parts in the computer. This is why you should choose the best motherboard that can suit your build and needs. These are essentials that you must know before going to buy your motherboard.

Form Factor

Needless to say, the size of your motherboard plays a huge role before you can build and install it in your system. This becomes even more important when you are building your own customized PC. Most of the time, a lot of people tend to choose a motherboard that can fit well with their computer cases. However, you can also choose to use smaller motherboard because you can put it in a larger computer case.

Compatibility Issue

One thing that most people always forget during the selection of motherboard is they forget to check on whether their motherboards have been approved to work with their CPUs. While you can use older boards that can work well with different generations of processors due to similar socket type, most motherboards always require a BIOS update before they can even work with latest processors. At the same time, there are some rare cases where the CPU must use same socket type like the one on the motherboard.

Another important consideration is newer motherboards with the latest generation of processors also need a BIOS update before they can work with the newest CPUs in the market. In order to avoid any issue of incompatibility, it is best to check the manufacturer's website so that you can read the list of compatible processors on each motherboard.


Regarding chipset, you should ask yourself about which chipset that you really need. Since motherboards do come with one of several chipsets, each of them brings its own unique features that add certain capabilities to your motherboard. If you want to overclock your CPU, it is even more important for you to check on whether your chosen motherboard has a chipset that supports overclocking.

Graphic Card

The other question is how many graphic cards that you want to put on your motherboard. As most graphic cards use PCIe x16 slots, most motherboards will use at least two of them. When the first slot has been occupied, a lot of motherboards tend to force the other PCIe x16 slot to run at either 8x or 4x speed. This is can be a real bummer because certain graphic cards only work at certain speed. You should read the motherboard reviews to see how they can affect your whole motherboard setup.

Non-Graphic Card

As for non-graphic cards, you need to determine how many that you want to use. Then, you should decide on whether it contains the correct number of slots that support your build. Another thing that you should remember is most graphic cards will occupy two or three expansion slots and this can end up blocking some of the smaller slots on your motherboard. As always, read and consult the manufacturer's website so that you assess the suitability of your desired motherboard in your build.
