Last month, China’s biggest mobile phone player launched its second generation Mix Max phone - the Xiaomi Mi Max 2. This phone is the successor of the Xiaomi Mi Max, a phone which had received rave reviews from the public. At that time, the device only came with one color option which is the gold variant. It was quite disappointing for many customers, especially those who prefer a different shade to their Xiaomi phone. The gold variant wasn’t really everyone’s favorite flavor, thus affected the phone’s appeal to consumers.
There were rumors circulating on the web regarding Xiaomi launching the Mi 6 Plus alongside the Mi 6 but that didn’t happen. Not to mention, leaks associated with the Mi 6 Plus waned after the Mi 6’s release in April. Fortunately, these leaks have surfaced again online, giving Xiaomi fans hope of a launch soon.

Released in 2016, the Xiaomi Redmi 4 Prime seems like any other Xiaomi phone. But look a little closer and you’ll see the major differences in this compared to its predecessor, the Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime. Although not as popular as the Redmi Note 4 or Redmi 4X, the 4 Prime does hold its own in the mobile phone market.
Xiaomi has an eye for creating smooth, sleek mobile phones. The same can be seen in its Redmi 4 Prime. The combination of front glass and rear aluminium body gives a sense of quality-perfected. Its weight is average at 156g but isn’t too heavy when held for long periods. At 5 inches, the Redmi 4 Prime is ideal for the average person’s palm size.
The IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen sports 16M colours much like any other top-of-the-line smartphone. You may have to get a screen protector for the 4 Prime, but it’s part of charm. The MIUI 8 works smooth with updates that keep it running immaculate.
Underneath the externals, the Redmi 4 Prime runs on the Qualcomm MSM8953 Snapdragon 625 chipset with an octa-core 2.0 Cortex-A53 CPU and Adreno 506 GPU. The OS is Android 6 (Marshmallow) and is speedy enough to give the phone lively feel. It’s perfect for both work and connectivity. However, you may find excessive gaming is a little slower as time goes by.
The Redmi 4 Prime’s internal storage is standard at 32 GB with 3 GB RAM. You can add external storage via microSD card up to 256 GB. Unlike most phones in this range, the 4 Prime comes with 3 GB RAM which is surprising considering its midrange nature. Storage space won’t be an issue as you can fit more with the external storage.
Camera specs aren’t too impressive (Xiaomi phones are not known for their cameras) but the camera does the job. The rear shooter is a 13MP f/2.2 camera that comes with phase detection autofocus, dual-LED dual-tone flash, geo tagging, touch focus, face detection and HDR. The secondary (rear) camera is a 5MP f/2.2 shooter. Both are able to capture video at 1080p@30fps. Redmi 4 Prime also comes with active noise cancellation and dedicated mic to enhance sound input.
In today’s world, we have to stay connected. The Xiaomi Redmi 4 Prime gets you connected with Bluetooth 4.2, A-GPS, SMS, MMS, Email, IM, microUSB 2.0, Wi-Fi and hotspot capabilities. You also get easy access through the rear fingerprint scanner.
The battery is a non-removable Li-Po 4100 mAh cell and fast charging is also part of the phone’s selling points. The phone itself comes in Gold, Dark Grey, and Silver and is reasonably priced in Malaysia. Overall, the Xiaomi Redmi 4 Prime is one mobile phone you may want to consider if you’re looking for something cheap yet functional.
