Xiaomi Planning to Release Mi Note 3 in Q3 2017

19 May 2017
Jonathan So

Xiaomi enjoyed amazing success with the recent flash sale of its Mi6 flagship, selling out in the first few hours. However, news that the company will not be releasing the Mi6 Plus has raised some questions. To compensate for the lack of the Mi6 Plus launch, latest rumours are suggesting that the Mi Note 3 is going to be unveiled much sooner than initially planned.

According to Chinese news site MyDrivers, the Mi Note 3 is going to be launched in the third quarter of 2017, followed by the Mi Mix 2 in the last quarter of the year. Experts believe that the Mi6 Plus could be renamed to Mi Note 3 and will feature improved specifications befitting Xiaomi’s notable Note series. While still unconfirmed, the Mi Note 3 is predicted to feature a QHD panel that uses AMOLED display technology. Another key hardware component that is expected to be featured on the Mi Note 3 will be the dual-camera setup that was popular on the recently released Mi6 smartphone.

The Mi Note 2, the predecessor of the upcoming Mi Note 3, came equipped with a 4,070mAh battery and a display screen measuring 5.7 inches. The upcoming flagship is rumoured to feature the same screen size but as there are speculations that the battery capacity will be larger on the Mi Note 3. The company might also be removing the headphone jack, which will make the phone splash-resistant.

In terms of the potential processor which will power the Mi Note 3, Xiaomi would probably need to settle for the Snapdragon 835 chipset unless Qualcomm releases a slightly better-performing SOC like it did in 2016 with its Snapdragon 821. However, the company did announce that it is working on its very own Surge S1 SoC that was fabricated on the 28nm architecture and a 10nm FinFET that could potentially challenge the Snapdragon 835 and Exynos 8885 which we might see debuting on the Mi Note 3.
