Featuring an all-screen display with no punch hole and notch, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is aiming for a cleaner look. Xiaomi has made this possible with a sliding mechanism on the display for its front camera to appear. Magnets are fitted under the screen to prevent accidental slides, so it will take some force in order to slide the screen up and down.
Aside from just taking selfies, you can leverage the sliding action to answer calls or use the face unlock feature. But if you find sliding to be a trouble for these two actions, you can always rely on swiping on your screen to answer calls and use the rear fingerprint scanner to unlock your phone.
With a 6.39-inch display, that means using the phone on one-hand mode may be a bit awkward. That said, the Full HD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) Super AMOLED display on the Xiaomi Mi mix 3 shows great contrast and vivid colours, making video watching and gaming quite enjoyable in terms of the viewing experience.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 packs a Snapdragon 845 chip with an octa-core processor, 126GB of storage and 6GB of RAM (can be upgraded to 8GB or 10GB RAM). Although the Snapdragon chipset is good enough for Android 9.0 Pie to run smoothly without any stutter, it isn't the latest chip from Qualcomm, which puts the phone slightly behind its competing models that are already equipped with the latest Snapdragon chipset.
When it comes to the camera department, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 features a rear camera with dual 12MP lenses with different focal lengths, which allow you to take portrait-mode images and run a 2x zoom without compromising detail. The phone's rear camera excels when you capture sceneries and objects in good lighting, and the result is clear, detailed shots.
To enhance your image brightness and colour, you can turn on the HDR mode by tapping the Auto icon at the top of the screen. Alternatively, you can experiment with the AI mode which is capable of recognising 27 categories of objects including flowers, food, and faces. As the AI detects a particular object or scene, the camera app will automatically adjust the settings to deliver the most optimised shot that fits the object captured.
When taking selfies, simply slide the screen down and you'll find 20MP + 2MP front-facing cameras that can also take portrait mode shots. Although the quality and clarity of those shots may not be as good as the rear camera, selfies taken on the Mi Mix 3's front camera are considered up to par with typical Instagram photos.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 runs on Android 9.0 Pie but comes with Xiaomi's MIUI 10 OS interface, which means the app drawer is removed and all apps are stored on home screens. The apps, theme, and colour scheme can look a little different from other Android phones. But it's not a major problem as it will only take some getting used to.
Housing a 3,200 mAh battery, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 can last a full day on a single charge with mixed, casual use. That entails several hours of YouTube streaming, several hours of music streaming and a combination of texting, web browsing, social media, emails and calls throughout the day.
Thanks to the Mi Mix 3's Quick Charge support, you can quickly get your phone charged from 0 to full in about 2 hours. Just when we thought Quick Charge is good enough, the phone also provides support for Qi wireless fast charging, which can be activated when you place the Mi Mix 3 on top of the charging pad that comes included in the box.
Gaming & Movies
Since the screen is virtually bezel-less and notch-free, you get to see a better view of your games. Although the phone's Full HD display graphics aren't as detailed as QHD resolutions and higher pixel densities, playing PUBG on a high graphics setting is still a smooth experience without overheating.
When it comes to streaming movies on your favourite platform, you may find yourself enjoying the viewing angles despite the lack of vibrance in colours. Designed with a single, down-firing speaker on the base, the Xiaomi phone delivers a pretty good sound quality. While it's not the most impressive kind in the market, the volume can go high enough to give you surrounding-like audio.
The only drawback for those who prefer watching movies on their headphones is that there's no 3.5mm headphone jack. You can either use your Bluetooth wireless headphones or use the adapter that comes with your purchase to connect your wired headphones through the USB Type-C port.
Is Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 waterproof?
According to the official website and other specs website, Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 doesn't have any sort of IP68 certification which means it is not waterproof. This is because of the slider mechanism which leaves a lot of space for moisture to get inside.
