The Mobile World Congress (a.k.a MWC) 2018, one of the biggest events in the mobile industry has just recently ended last Friday in Barcelona. As we look back at the festivities, MWC this year felt a little underwhelming, probably because Samsung stole the show before the event even officially began with the launch of the Galaxy S9. Nevertheless, the show still had its fair share of highlights that is worth talking about. Hence, below are some of the most notable handsets that were seen last week.
Samsung smartphones are typically recognised as being the best Android phones on the market. After weeks of speculations, the Galaxy S9 has officially been launched during the Samsung Unpacked event held ahead of the Mobile World Congress last Sunday. On paper, the device looks like the new flagship phone to beat, setting new benchmarks and world’s-firsts.
2017 has been a great year for South Korean smartphone manufacturers, Samsung as it managed to regain its reputation as the top brand in the industry with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 smartphones. The company is planning to leverage on the momentum it has built by releasing its next flagship, the Galaxy S9.

What do you get if you put together a full 10x optical zoom camera lens, 16-MP BSI CMOS sensor, Xenon flash, and 25 Smart modes into a smartphone? You will get what Samsung markets as the thing that blurs the line between a camera and smartphone; the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom. On a basis, the S4 Zoom is a 4.3-inch Android smartphone that packs a big punch in the camera areas. The overall design of it follows more to its sibling; the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini, and the camera part of it resembles the Samsung Galaxy Camera. The camera part of the S4 Zoom sports a Zoom Ring of which controls the zoom, access camera modes, and quickly share photos—all by a few twists of the Zoom Ring.
Coming identical to the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini in terms of the screen (4.3-inch), the S4 Zoom is generally thicker to compensate for the added camera lens. It’s 15.4mm in thickness and 208g in weight. With a Super AMOLED touchscreen, Gorilla Glass 3 for added protection, 960x540 resolution, 256ppi pixel density, the S4 Zoom is a great phone for both smartphone reasons and camera reasons.
Running on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and Samsung’s TouchWiz UI overlaid on the top, the S4 Zoom is an Android device through and through. Commonly, you have access to the Google Play Store and access to the new S Travel app that is powered by TripAdvisor—which recommends new places for you to visit around the world based on your searches and the pictures that you take. Another app that could take center stage is Story Album where you can put your photos in collages and print them out as hardcopies. You get about 5GB of onboard memory, of which can be extended up to 50GB.
The performance of the S4 Zoom is quite admirable on its own—with a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 1.5GB of Ram, multitasking and swiping between homescreens and applications feel easy and smooth. The audio quality is also boosted from the S4 and S4 Mini thanks to the improved speaker and audio drivers.
You can get up to 7 hours running of 3G and up to 9 hours over Wi-Fi connection. It also has 4G LTE support, NFC, low energy Bluetooth 4.0, and both A-GPS and GLONASS navigation systems. The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom is perfect for those wanting the best of both the smartphone and camera worlds—given that you don’t mind the extra bulky overall design. But it’s a great compensation for good quality pictures and videos. Get it if you want a true cameraphone by Samsung.
