Hands on with the Microsoft Lumia 540

Like many other Microsoft Lumia models, the Microsoft Lumia 540 comes in a variety of colours. Ranging from black, blue, white and orange. The device itself has a glossy back case while a glass finish coats the front. Build quality of the Microsoft Lumia 540 is strong and sturdy. The front-facing 5MP camera embedded into the glass casing neatly hides away in the overall design. Typical of Microsoft Lumia smartphones, the microUSB port is at the bottom while the headphone jack is on the top. The IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen is bright and full in its depth of colour. On the back sits the 8MP camera and LED flash. Image quality is outstanding, typical of Microsoft’s photo devices. As for the exterior, you’ll realise that the back cover comes off easily so you won’t chip your nails. That feature comes in handy if you love to open up your smartphone.

The phone itself runs on the Windows 8.1 while updates could go up to Windows 8.5. Windows includes apps such as OneDrive and OneNote, giving you easy reach for all your work needs. The 1.2GHz QuadCore CPU that is a QualComm Snapdragon 200 processor with the Adreno 302 GPU works well with the overall feel of the phone. Along with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage, the device feels speedy for most applications in the mid-range category. As with any smartphone Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi, SMS, MP3 and MP4 comes standard. Other features include accelerometer and proximity sensors together with noise cancellation enhance the phone’s value overall. Battery power is strong throughout the day (with normal usage) with the Li-ion 2200 mAh battery.
