Suspenders is an ideal alternative for a belt if you need to keep your pants up particularly if they are a little loose. Typically, the extra material tends to bunch up under your belt, which isn’t the most comfortable feeling. There are two types of suspenders: the kind that attaches to your trousers with clips and the kind that button onto your pants. Suspenders go well with a more put together look, compared to just jeans and a t-shirt. Here are ways you can incorporate suspenders into your wardrobe.
Wear it with a suit
Wearing a suit with suspenders is especially beneficial for shorter guys. This is because it eliminates the horizontal line of the belt that visually cuts you in half and elongates the legs. If you’re planning to wear a suit, do make sure that the pants come with a side adjuster or suspender button.
Selecting the right suspenders
There are usually two things to consider when it comes to choosing the right suspenders: the size and the colour. Not all suspenders are made equal as they come in different lengths and widths. Nevertheless, most suspenders are around 46 inches in length and are adjustable. If you’re still worried about it being too short, there are certain brands that specially custom-made them.
Other than that, the standard width of the suspenders is 1 3/8 inches and suits to most body types. For bigger guys, it is advisable to purchase suspender with a bigger width (more than 2 inches wide).
Types of colours
When it comes to colours, suspenders do not have to match with the colours of your shirt, suit or even tie. Most of the time, your suspenders will be hidden under your jacket, that is why the colour or pattern are less important. Nonetheless, if you still wish to choose the colours and patterns, there are ways to do so. First and foremost, if you’re going for a formal look, it is advisable to choose darker and solid colours. A rule of thumb is to pick suspenders that darker than your dress shirt. On top of that, the colour of the hardware on your suspender is also important. For example, the silver hardware on the suspender can help to compliment the silver details on either your watch or cuff-links.
When not to wear suspenders
Suspenders and belts are two methods of keeping your pants up. So, it is not advisable to wear them together as it is similar to wearing a tie bar with a waistcoat. Don’t mix them together and simply choose one method or the other. Also, suspenders should not be worn if your pants are tight or nicely fitted to your waist. It is best worn when there is a little room around the waist.
