Caroni 21 Year Old Extra Strong Imperial Proof Rum
RM 1,446.50
Harvey Nichols

Use code CNY10 for 10% OFF discount on fashion only | Caroni is the Karuizawa of the rum world. Trinidad was once home to over fifty distilleries, now only Angostura remains. Established in 1918 Caroni was famed for supplying the British Navy with its full-bodied and full-throttle rums, made using its own Trinidadian sugar cane. However, it was sadly closed in 2002 and then demolished. The heavy rums that were saved are now top of the bucket list for collectors. Distilled in 1996, this 100% Trinidad Rum was tropically matured for 21 years before being bottled at a punchy 57.18%. Despite its age and massive weight, it's an energetic and intense tot, positively reverberating with dark treacle, roasted banana, woody cardamom, piquant pepper, strawberry jam, prune, melting tar, dried mint and poached pear. It's reported that 86% of this rum was lost to the angels' share, making the 14% that made it into bottles very rare liquid indeed. The label is a recreation of the Caroni labels of the 1940s, harking back to the golden age of Trinidadian rum. This rare bottling was filled for rum royalty Velier. This outfit out of Genoa, is spearheaded by rum expert, Caribbean hopper, raconteur and international man of mystery Luca Gargano - a gentleman who refuses to associate with watches, cell phones, cars, newspapers or politicians. Anybody seriously into rum in this day and age, needs to be all over Velier. Their expertise in uncovering the world's finest and rarest rums are second to none.£38.57 per 100.00ml

Caroni 23 Year Old 1994 Guyana Stock Rum
RM 1,714.30
Harvey Nichols

Use code CNY10 for 10% OFF discount on fashion only | Caroni is the Karuizawa of the rum world. Trinidad was once home to over fifty distilleries, now only Angostura remains. Established in 1918 Caroni was famed for supplying the British Navy with its full-bodied and full-throttle rums, made using its own Trinidadian sugar cane. However, it was sadly closed in 2002 and then demolished. The heavy rums that were saved are now top of the bucket list for collectors. Distilled in 1994, this rum matured on its birth island of Trinidad until 2008. It then spent a further nine years in Guyana before being bottled in 2017 at a punchy 57.18%. The tropical climate has paid a heavy toll on the volume of this spirit, 85% was reported lost to the evaporation the whisky industry calls the angels' share. Due to coolness of the Scottish climate, evaporation is slow and we're talking single figure percentage losses in Scotch. But for this 23 Year Old Caroni only 15% of the original spirit remained. This rare and dwindling rum is a robust melange of cocoa, caramel made by melting Demerara sugar and butter, polished antique furniture, barbecued bananas stuffed with chocolate buttons, warm leather, vanilla pods, sandalwood and something like mint and mango salsa.
