As you are in physical contact with your pillow case almost every day, choosing the right pillow case for you is important. There are many things you need to consider when choosing pillow cases such as its size, material, and thread count.
Size of the Pillow Cases
Pillow cases come in a variety of sizes so you should know which pillow case size do you need, be it square, standard, queen, or king. These pillow cases should match the size of your pillow. The smallest of the lot is square pillow cases. These cases, also known as European pillow cases, come in many sizes, ranging from 40.6cm by 40.6cm, to 66cm by 66cm. On the other hand, standard pillow cases fit on most pillows and measures 50.8cm by 66cm. Standard pillows fit well on beds of all sizes from twin up to queen. Queen-sized pillow cases usually measure 50.8cm to 76.2cm which are used for oversized pillows and are best placed on larger beds. King pillow cases are the largest option available, measuring from 50.8cm up to 91.4cm.
Materials Used to Make Pillow Cases
You should choose pillow cases that are smooth and soft as they provide more comfort when you rest your head on them. Pillow cases available in the market today are typically made from materials such as cotton, polyester, flannel, and many more. Less common options include linen and satin. Each of these materials has its respective benefits.
Cotton pillow cases are the most used material type amongst Malaysian households because they are soft and comfortable. Cotton is also easy to care and clean as all you need to do is to throw them into the washing machine and dry them in the dryer.
Polyester fabric is made from a mixture of naturally occurring chemicals and synthetics. Polyester gives a smooth and shiny look to pillow cases. The advantage of polyester pillow cases is that they can last a long time. It is not as absorbent as cotton, hence it is often mixed with cotton to make it more absorbent.
Flannel is a soft, warm, and comfortable fabric. Flannel is absorbent and warm to the touch, even in the cold, making them ideal to be used in air-conditioned rooms or during cold nights. Flannel can either be brushed or unbrushed. The brushed version adds an extra level of softness to the fabric which is suitable for bedding. Flannel pillowcases are also easy to clean as they can be washed in the washing machine. To avoid the colour from fading, you should turn the pillow cases inside out before you start the washing process.
Thread count refers to the number of threads within a square inch of fabric. The higher the count thread count, the softer the fabric will be. If you are looking for a soft pillow case, you should go with a thread count of 400.
