Asmik Welcome to the Quiet Room (Blu-ray) (Special Edition) (English Subtitled) (Japan Version)

Sanity is relative in Otakus in Love director Masuo Suzuki's new film Welcome to the Quiet Room (a.k.a. Quiet Room ni Yokoso). Based on the director's own novel, the film follows the experiences of a young woman who gets committed into a mental institution. Popular television actress Uchida Yuki (Cat's Eye), starring in her first film in nine years, plays a typical fast-living urbanite whose thin guise of sanity is suddenly stripped away. A goth-looking Aoi Yu (Hula Girls), campy Tsumabuki Satoshi (Nada Sou Sou), scenery-chewing Otake Shinobu (Go), and tough-talking Ryo (Canary) round out the film's questionably mad, questionably sane characters, along with screenwriter-cum-actor Kudo Kankuro (Ping Pong) and director-cum-actor Tsukamoto Shinya (Nightmare Detective).

After a bout with some sleeping pills, journalist Asuka (Uchida Yuki) wakes up in a mental asylum quiet room. She has no recollection of how she ended up there, and quickly finds out that she won't be leaving anytime soon. Unable to reason her way out, Asuka has little choice but to adapt to her new environment and unpredictable wardmates, like brassy porn actress Nishino (Otake Shinobu) and clad-in-black anorexic Miki (Aoi Yu). Finally given the chance to slow down, Asuka begins to come to terms with inner ghosts and her restless life of deadline-chasing, drinking, and pill-popping. Visits from her variety show host boyfriend Tetsuo (Kudo Kankuro) and his looney-tunes assistant (Tsumabuki Satoshi) only remind her that the world outside is no saner than her new home.

Asmik Koi no Mon (Blu-ray) (Special Edition) (English Subtitled) (Japan Version) at 38.99 USD from YesAsia
Asmik Koi no Mon (Blu-ray) (Special Edition) (English Subtitled) (Japan Version)
RM 172.50
Can being an otaku lead to love? Multi-talented actor/writer/playwright/novelist Matsuo Suzuki makes his directorial debut with the quirky romantic comedy Koi no Mon (AKA Otakus in Love). Aoki Mon (Matsuda Ryuhei of Blue Spring and Gohatto) is a manga-obsessed geek who creates his own manga by arranging colored stones in wooden boxes. Love literally strikes him when he meets Akashi Koino (Sakai Wakana of Kisarazu Cat's Eye and No Problem 2), an amateur manga artist and cosplay fanatic who decides that Mon is the perfect partner for her wacky fantasy cosplay games. But after being dressed up in the costume of her favorite video game character, Mon decides that Koino's obsessed geek-girl tendencies are even too much for a self-acknowledged otaku like him. Still, that isn't enough to deter Koino from chasing her chosen knight in shining armor!

Koi no Mon is based on a manga by Hanyunyuu Jun, and director Matsuo Suzuki brings a colorful, energetic, and utterly charming grace to this decidedly oddball romance. Featuring many in-jokes about Japan's popular manga scene, including cameos from many manga and film professionals, like Anno Hideaki of Neon Genesis Evangelion and internationally notorious filmmaker Miike Takashi, Koi no Mon is a different and entertainingly offbeat valentine for Japanese media enthusiasts - and everyone else too!

Asmik A Pierrot (Blu-ray) (Special Edition) (English Subtitled) (Japan Version) at 38.99 USD from YesAsia
Asmik A Pierrot (Blu-ray) (Special Edition) (English Subtitled) (Japan Version)
RM 172.50
Directed by Mori Junichi (Laundry), A Pierrot (a.k.a. Gravity's Clowns) examines the modern family through an emotionally haunting suspense drama. Based on a novel by Isaka Kotaro whose Accuracy of Death was also recently adapted for the big screen, A Pierrot revolves around a family of four with a complicated past that brews mystery and trouble in the present. Kase Ryo (I Just Didn't Do It) and Okada Masaki (Halfway) form the core of the film as brothers who may be more different than anyone expected, while Kohinata Fumiyo and Suzuki Kyoka play the parents. Also co-starring Yoshitaka Yuriko (Snakes and Earrings) and Okada Yoshinori (Kisarazu Cat's Eye), A Pierrot explores the role of genetics in determining families and individuals as well as the nature versus nurture debate, giving the film's mystery an intriguing and affecting spin.

On the outset, the Okunos seem like a normal happy family with father Tadashi (Kohinata Fumiyo) and his two bright sons, genetics researcher Izumi (Kase Ryo) and artsy Haru (Okada Masaki). When a series of arson attacks strike the neighborhood, clues left at the crime scenes seem to be somehow related to the Okunos. Izumi and Haru try to get to the bottom of mystery, slowly unveiling a tragic family secret that has come back to haunt them.

Asmik The Handsome Suit (Blu-ray) (Special Edition) (English Subtitled) (Japan Version)
RM 172.50
The clothes make the man in the hilarious comedy The Handsome Suit, the first feature from commercial director Hanabusa Tsutomu. Based on a novel by Suzuki Osami, The Handsome Suit serves as a starring vehicle for slight and portly television comedian Tsukaji Muga from The Mamiya Brothers. Tanihara Shosuke (Lovely Complex) plays his handsome counterpart in a side-tickling self-parodying performance. Also co-starring The Mamiya Brothers' Kitagawa Keiko, The Handsome Suit loads in the visual and verbal gags for a laughing good time at the movies.

Diner owner Takuro (Tsukaji Muga) is the star in the kitchen with his fabulous cooking skills, but his below-average appearances make him a dud with the ladies. While renting a tux for his friend's wedding, Takuro ends up with a "handsome suit" that magically transforms him into a tall and dashing hunk (Tanihara Shosuke)! Suddenly, the world's at Takuro's feet as he becomes the hottest male model on the scene and the apple of every woman's eyes. But it's not so easy juggling two lives, especially when his suit keeps threatening to malfunction and reveal his true face.

Asmik Shaberedomo Shaberedomo (Blu-ray) (Special Edition) (English Subtitled) (Japan Version)
RM 172.50
Japanese cinema has seen its fair share of zero-to-hero dramas, but none quite like Shaberedomo Shaberedomo (a.k.a. Talk, Talk, Talk). Based on a Sato Takako novel, the film revolves around the traditional art of rakugo, or comical storytelling. A storyteller, or rakugoka, recites a long and often complicated comical story, taking on different characters through variations in tone and pitch, facial expressions, and slight gestures. Rakugo is sometimes cheekily referred to as sit-down comedy, as the storyteller remains seated throughout, with only a paper fan as prop.

Bringing rakugo to the big screen is no easy task but director Hirayama Hideyuki (The Laughing Frog) and lead Kokubun Taichi (of rock band Tokio) do a fine job of capturing the spirit of the art in this heartwarming, but never cloying film. The rakugo routines are interesting and enjoyable to see and watch, and often remarkably funny. Shaberedomo Shaberedomo is largely people-driven, presenting very real personalities that are not necessarily likable, but always understandable. Much of the film's charm comes from gradually learning about the characters and seeing them grow.

Mitsuba (Kokubun Taichi) has been studying rakugo for years, but he elicits more yawns than laughs. A decidedly mediocre representative of a dying art, he stubbornly perseveres out of passion and pride. Through an odd turn of events, he ends up teaching rakugo to three students who are even less verbally gifted than him - a sullen beauty (Karina), a loud dialect-speaking kid (Morinaga Yuki), and a tongue-tied baseball player-turned-commentator (Matsushige Yutaka). Though none are particularly interested in rakugo initially, they slowly but surely begin to find their way with words. Mitsuba, meanwhile, is preparing for his biggest challenge: performing his master's (Ito Shiro) favorite story.

Asmik Mamiya Kyodai (Blu-ray) (Special Edition) (English Subtitled) (Japan Version)
RM 172.50
Viva otakus! If Train Man was a sympathetic look at Japanese otakus, then Mamiya Kyodai (a.k.a. The Mamiya Brothers) fully romanticizes the seemingly go-nowhere lives of thirty-something year-old guys suffering from arrested development. Sasaki Kuranosuke and Tsukaji Muga are Akinobu and Tetsunobu Mamiya, two brothers with decidedly dead-end jobs - one is a beer taster and the other a school janitor - who nonetheless live mostly fulfilling lives. After each day of nine-to-five drudgery, the two retire to their shared apartment, which doubles as a shrine to their pet obsessions, and entertain themselves in various otaku-familiar ways. Movies, manga, crossword puzzles, sports - life is a hobby-filled paradise for the Mamiya brothers.

However, there's also love - or the lack of it. Both brothers still maintain a healthy interest in the opposite sex, and find targets in the form of teacher Kuzuhara (gorgeous J-drama queen Tokiwa Takako) and adorable video store clerk Naomi (idol Sawajiri Erika). The Mamiya brothers make their move, but all manner of obstacles crop up, including romantic rivals, work issues, and just plain bad luck. Can the Mamiya Brothers get the girls, keep their hobbies, and live the ultimate otaku dream?

RM 214.60
Nakayama Miho (Love Letter) makes her return to the big screen after over 12 years in the timeless romance Sayonara Itsuka, the film adaptation of the novel by Tsuji Hitonari (also Nakayama's husband). A Moment to Remember director John H. Lee took the reins in 2008 as co-writer/director for the film, which was originally planned to be made in 2002. Spanning 25 years and three cities worldwide, the steamy romantic drama was a hit with Japanese audience, grossing over one billion yen during its theatrical run.

In 1975, Yutaka (Nishijima Hidetoshi, Casshern) is transferred to Bangkok for work. One day, he meets the beautiful and mysterious Toko (Nakayama Miho) in a bar and is attracted to her right away. Despite being engaged to Mitsuko (Ishida Yuriko), the two begin a passionate affair that ends as quickly as it began. 25 years later, the former lovers are reunited in Bangkok, and their love is ignited once again. Will their love survive the second time around?

A mysterious conductor brings hope to a small-town orchestra facing tough times in Maestro!, the live-action adaptation of an award-winning manga by Saso Akira (Shindou). Set in a small town, Maestro! follows a local orchestra that is forced to disband after its sponsor goes bankrupt. When the members reunite, a mysterious man named Tetsusaburo (Nishida Toshiyuki) appears and takes the job as the new conductor. Even though the members initially reject his methods, they eventually come to accept Tetsusaburo's eccentric methods and fall in love with music once again.

In addition to Nishida Toshiyuki and Matsuzaka Tori, Maestro! also marks the acting debut of singer-songwriter Miwa. The film also featured Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin conductor Sato Yutaka as technical advisor.

This Special Limited Collector's Edition of Koi no Mon comes with two unsubtitled bonus DVDs which include the following features:

  • Audio commentary from director Matsuo Suzuki
  • Making of
  • Interviews
  • Music video
  • Director Matsuo Suzuki at the Venice Film Festival
  • Talk show with Matsuo Suzuki, Matsuda Ryuhei, Sakai Wakana, Kudo Kankuro
