DO NOT Open the lid while food is cooking
Do you want to know what it feels like to have boiling food fly out of a pot? That’s what happens when you open a pressure cooker while the food is cooking. Time for a little science lesson. Due to the immense pressure, opening the pot will result in a sudden release of pressure outward. As the pressure is released, the food follows the flow of compressed air outward and BANG! you have a food explosion! The best thing to do would be to release some compressed air through the nozzle on the top of your lid and turn off the fire.
DO NOT Use a scrub on the inside surface
Most pots these days have an interior coated with non-stick metal. This is a thin layer of coating that prevents food stains and rust from developing. Unfortunately, this protective layer can wear off with the use of a scrub or abrasive washing sponge. As we in Malaysia generally use sponges equipped with scrubs to rub away tough stains, we may tend to use it on our pressure cooker. One way to avoid this would be to let the pressure cooker soak in some liquid detergent for about half an hour before washing it with a soft sponge.
DO Read the manual before using the pressure cooker
Just as with any other electrical appliance, using a pressure cooker requires the right method. It is best that you go through the user’s manual to know what the pressure cooker’s components are. find out how you can effectively use this wonderful machine to create your favourite delicacies. It is also important to know what types of food can be cooked in the pressure cooker as not all food can be prepared with the same method. What you could do would be to find some recipes (both traditional, western, and fusion) to try out using the pressure cooker.
