More than just a cool, cultivated name
Think fast! When we say acne what’s the first thing that comes to mind? If you were thinking of the skin condition - you’re not alone. This Swedish brand first went by the name Acne which in actuality stands for Ambition to Create Novel Expressions. According to an article on The Guardian, Co-founder and current Creative Director, Jonny Johansson was intrigued by the idea of “appropriating a difficult word”. Today, it’s known the world over as Acne Studios.
Spawned by Jonny Johansson’s interest in art, architecture, contemporary culture and photography, a fashion house unlike any other was born. The multifaceted approach of this Stockholm based brand has been an inspiration to many fashion and art enthusiasts since its inception. Acne started out as a digital art, graphic design and film collective. In 1997, the brand branched out into fashion with a pair of raw Acne Studios denim jeans. In 2005, the first issue of ‘Acne Paper’ themed The City was released. Issues that followed observed different themes such as The Body, Elegance and Playfulness.
Re-live the highlife with Acne Studios highlights
A testament to the brand’s core values, Acne Studios set up its Stockholm headquarters in the Old Town part of the city. Since 2007, the brand made a historic, old bank building at Lilla Nygatan 23 their hip design home. The next year, Acne joined forces with fashion high-flier, Lanvin and created an all-denim line for men and women. We’re talking coats, blouses, dresses, skirts, trousers and shorts made with denim – a trend that’s very much back in trend today. Among many of the brand’s collaborations, Acne Studios has worked with photographer Lord Snowdon. This resulted in a book of portraits which highlighted the classic blue work shirt and eight new shirt designs.
During Paris Fashion Week in 2010, Acne marked another milestone with the debut of their first furniture collection. Inspired by a classic Swedish sofa design made by Carl Malmsten, the brand breathed new life into it by stretching and altering the original. 2013 saw the brand opening a 4, 000 square foot Acne Studios flagship outlet in the famed SoHo district, Lower Manhattan, New York City. As of the time this article was written, the brand was said to have 30 stores across the globe.
Slicker than your average fashion brand
While there has been talk of how Acne Studios have become a mainstream brand with its celebrity following, there’s no denying the reach that Acne Studios have achieved so far. Jonny Johansson’s love for music took centre stage for the brand’s 2013 Spring Collection. The pieces were inspired by a cover of the Neil Young song ‘Wrecking Ball’ performed by Emmylou Harris. To date, Acne Studios continues to challenge the norm with their eclectic material choices, customized fabrics, highlighting the tailoring of each piece and zeroing in on the design aesthetic and details.
One of Acne Studios latest projects include the brands eyewear collection. The standout frames feature anti-reflective and UV protected lenses and are handmade in France. All the unisex styles comes complete with a soft case and gift box. The iconic styles include a fresh take on the classic pilot aviator called Spitfire, oval shaped frames and lenses with contrasting colours named Mustang, a new oversized frame called Library which debuted during the Men’s Fall/Winter 2015 presentation, round frames called Sigmund, and a new futuristic style called Mask.
