Let’s go back to the beginning
A self-confessed shy person, Phillip Lim’s rise in the fashion industry and within fashion circles all over the globe is part fairy tale and all-around genius. Armed with creativity, originality and a panache for what works, Phillip Lim makes fashion accessible and more importantly usable daily for fashion fans like you and me. This lines up perfectly with his brand’s reason for existence. 3.1 Phillip Lim’s core purpose is to provide “beautiful everyday classics accented with a sense of madness.”
All of this is evident in the effortlessly cool and chic designs for both men and women. Since its inception, 3.1 Phillip Lim’s frontline vision has been to churn out designer accessories, clothing and footwear at ‘contemporary prices’. This genius move not only broke the barrier to the (previously latent) entry-level designer market, it ascertained the brand as a pioneer in the industry.
It all began in 2005, when the brand showcased its first women’s ready-to-wear collection in New York. In the short span of the year, Phillip Lim came in first place for the Women’s Designer ‘Rising Star’ category awarded by Fashion Group International. In the same year, he received a nomination for the highly acclaimed CFDA and Vogue Fashion Fund Award. Sequentially, this design maven won the 2007 CFDA Swarovski Award for womenswear and opened his first standalone 3.1 Phillip Lim boutique in New York City.
Success continued to follow Phillip Lim as he opened a store in Tokyo and on Robertson, Los Angeles in the year 2008. The following year marked a huge step for the brand as it launched its menswear collection in New York. Phillip Lim also opened Seoul’s Fashion Week in addition to breaking ground on his fourth and largest store in Cheondam-Dong District, Seoul. It was in October2010 that the brand marked its fifth store opening in five years with a store.
The year that followed saw the brand debuting its first menswear collection in Paris. It was the first time the brand made a debut outside of New York. Within the same year, 3.1 Phillip Lim launched its fully evolved accessories collection that is evidently another one of the designer’s forte. In addition to that, he was nominated for CFDA’s Swarovski Award for menswear, won GQ China’s Designer of the Year and opened a store.
2012 marked the digital birthday of the 3.1 Phillip Lim brand as it launched its e-commerce sites to make the designs accessible to enthusiasts all over the world. Phillip received the 2012 CFDA Swarovski Award for his fresh line of menswear. In the following year, the brand set up shop again with its second store.
Proving that his accessory game was strong long before the hashtag caught on, Phillip won the 2013 CFDA Accessories Designer of the year award and the Ace (Accessories Council) Award for accessory design. The brand also partnered up with Target in Canada and USA to launch its partnership offerings and opened a freestanding store in Beijing and London too.
Last year, Phillip Lim dressed the First Lady of The United States for her trip to meet the first lady of China. This momentous milestone was made sweeter with the brand’s second store opening here at Marina Bay Sands. 3.1 Phillip Lim went on to launching its denim casual collection and open its first store in Bangkok, Thailand.
3.1 Phillip Lim today is available in over 400 boutiques and department stores in 50 countries around the world. The brand has flagship stores strategically located here, in New York, Los Angeles, Seoul, Tokyo and Hong Kong.
